Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a vitamin E enrichment industrially and advantageously, by esterifying a substance containing tocopherol in a low concentration into the methyl ester in toluene, and eluting the toluene layer treated with a strongly basic resin with toluene containing an acid.
CONSTITUTION: A substance containing tocopherol in a low concentration which is formed as a by-product in the purification stage of a vegetable fat or oil is converted into the methyl ester by the conventional method except in toluene as a solvent, and the toluene layer separated from the reaction product is treated with a strongly basic resin, e.g. a strongly basic ion exchange resin such as Dowex (Dow chemical Co.).The tocopherol adsorbed by the resin is eluted with toluene containing an acid, e.g. acetic, boric or formic acid, as a developing solvent, and separated into α- to δ-tocopherols which are useful as a vitamin E enrichment or a raw material thereof or an antioxidant for food in high yield efficiently and simply.
