Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the scattering and evaporation of Mn and to manufacture a homogeneous alloy by a plasma arc melting method by putting Mn in a crucible while covering the upper part with Ti having lower vapor pressure than Mn and by melting the metals with irradiated plasma arc.
CONSTITUTION: Metals 3 to be melted are put in a water-cooled cooper crucible 2 in the case 1 of an arc melting furnace, the case 1 is evacuated, and gaseous Ar is introduced to keep the internal pressure at about 400W500 Torr. As the metals 3 Mn is put at the lower part and Ti is set so as to cover the upper part of the Mn. A voltage is then applied between the tip electrode 2 of an electrode support 11 and the crucible 2 from a DC power source 9 through a current controller 10 to generate arc from the electrode 2. The bottom of the crucible 2 is cooled with water-cooled pipeing 13. Thus, hot arc does not directly contact with Mn, so the scattering and sudden evaporation of Mn can be prevented, and a high quality alloy with less unevenness is obtd.
