Abstract

PURPOSE: To uniform the cell size of a foam and to increase cells, by employing a triethanolamine alkylsulfate as a cell size modifier in producing foamable styrene resin particles by a suspension polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene monomer such as styrene, vinyltoluene or chlorostyrene is dispersed in an aqueous medium. To this dispersion are added an organic blowing agent (e.g., propane or cyclopentane), a dispersant (e.g., alkylcellulose or sodium polyacrylate), a polymerization initiator (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) and a triethanolamine alkylsulfate as a cell size modifier. The amount of the triethanolamine alkylsulfate used is in the range: 1×10-4W1wt%, based on the weight of styrene resin particles formed. Then, the final mixture is suspension-polymerized by heating to obtain the purpose foamable styrene resin particles.
