Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain excellent foamable particles, by dissolving in a styrene type monomer, a small amount of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) alone or together with a styrene type resin, suspension-polymerizing the resulting solution and impregnating the particles formed with an organic bolwing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A solution is prepared by dissolving EVA having an ethylene content of below 55wt% in a mixture of a polystyrene type resin and a styrene type monomer or in a styrene monomer alone, so as to provide an EVA concentration of 0.001W0.5wt%. The solution, then, is suspension-polymerized in an aqueous medium. During or after the polymerization reaction, the resin particles formed are impregnated with 5W20wt%, based on the resin, of an aliphatic hydrocarbon such as propane. The diameter of suspended particles is controlled in the nallow range of 0.2W0.24mm. The foamable resin particles thus produced has excellent moldability, and can provide molded products having uniform cells, a high expansion ratio, smooth surfaces, because the combined use of the styrene type resin and the EVA makes cell size control easy.
