Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled alumina having improved mechanical strength by easy means, by molding a raw material containing α-alumina precursor powder and carbon black, primarily calcining the molded raw material, burning and removing the carbon, and secondarily calcining the molded material at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: An α-alumina precursor powder convertible into α-alumina at a high temperature is mixed with carbon black as uniformly as possible, and water and another molding assistant are added thereto if necessary, kneaded and then molded into a desired shape. The resultant molded alumina article is then dried fully and primarily calcined in a gaseous atmosphere containing oxygen, e.g. air, to burn and remove carbon black. The formed alumina is then secondarily calcined at a high temperature and converted into the α-alumina phase. The calcining atmosphere may be air or an inert gaseous atmosphere. The resultant α- alumina prepared by this method is suitable for a catalyst, catalyst carried, adsorbent, etc.
