Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture the titled metallic nitride powder made essentially of Fe4N and free from sintering among the particles by bringing H2 and NH3 into contact with iron oxide or the like while changing the mixing ratio as the reaction proceeds.
CONSTITUTION: Iron oxide such as α-Fe2O3 or iron oxyhydroxide such as α- FeOOH (A) is brought into contact with a gaseous mixture (B) of H2 with NH3 at about 350W550°C and reacted to form Fe4N. The material (A) may be impregnated or coated with a metallic compound of Co, Ni or the like. In the early stage of said reaction a gaseous mixture contg. ≥50% H2 preferably in <0.05vol. ratio of NH3/H2 is used, and as the reaction proceeds, the percentage of H2 is reduced. In the final stage a gaseous mixture contg. ≥50% NH3 preferably in 1W10vol. ratio of NH3/H2 is used.
