Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an iron-copper composite powder, consisting of iron powder and metallic copper uniformly adhered to the surfaces of the iron powder and having excellent compressibility, excellent moldability, and excellent mechanical properties, by a method in which iron powder is mixed with fine copper oxide or reductive copper compound particles and then heated in a reductive atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Atomized iron powder, reduced iron powder, or electrolytic iron powder is mixed with 0.5W10% (in terms of metallic copper) a reductive copper compound containing CuO or Cu2O of a grain size of 250mesh sizes or less. Then, the mixture is heated to 500W700°C in a single reductive gas, e.g., H2 or CO, or in a mixture of a reductive gas and a neutral gas, where a reduciable Cu oxide, e.g., CuO, etc., is reduced to a metallic copper and the metallic Cu reduced is almost uniformly adhered to the surfaces of iron powder in spots to form a Cu-Fe composite powder which is excellent in compressibility, moldability, etc. The Cu- Fe composite powder is most suitable as a raw powder for machine parts.
