PURPOSE: To enable softening comparable to that of rimmed steel in spite of relatively high carbon content by adding prescribed amounts of C, Mn, P, N and Al and/or Si to Fe.
CONSTITUTION: This soft steel wire rod consists of 0.02W0.25% C, ≤0.7% Mn, ≤0.015% P, ≤0.002% N, ≤0.1% Al and/or ≤0.3% Si and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Steel having said composition is refined, continuously cast into a billet, and hot rolled. The resulting rolled steel is soft and has low tensile strength comparable to that of rimmed steel and superior workability in spite of relatively high carbon content.
