Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress NOx generation in a car engine in which both spark and plasma ignitions are used by reducing ignition energy or disengaging the plasma ignition using an accelerative drive signal. CONSTITUTION:At the time of low load, a control circuit 24 closes a switch 34 to perform ignition with plasma ignition plug 6 worked by a low-voltage generator circuit 23 and a spark ignition plug 4 worked by an ignition circuit 13. At the time of acceleration, the acceleration sensor allow the control circuit 24 to open the switch 34 and the low-voltage generator circuit 23 is put out of operatible condition, and the plug 6 performs only normal spark ignition operated by a high-voltage generator circuit 22. Accordingly, the plugs 4 and 6 reduces their energy, so that an excessive rise of combustion temperature can be prevented and generation of NOx suppressed to a satisfactory degree. It is also possible that the low voltage at the circuit 23 is reduced by making capacitor 36 variable to reduce the ignition energy.
