Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an ester of high quality, having a large molecular weight and low degree of discoloration, and useful as a raw material for a cosmetic, in high yield in one stage, by reacting a mono- or polyfunctional carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst consisting of tin oxide as a main component.
CONSTITUTION: An about 4W36C mono- or polyfunctional carboxylic acid, e.g. isostearic or adipic acid, is reacted with an about 8W26C alcohol, e.g. octanol, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a tin oxide in which tin is preferably bivalent as a main component at 140W200°C under ordinary pressure for 3W5hr to give an ester having a relatively large number of carbon atoms. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of toluene, xylene, etc. capable of forming an azeotropic mixture with the formed water. The bivalent tin oxide catalyst is prepared by adding aqueous ammonia to an aqueous solution of stannous chloride up to a pH of 8W9, boiling the solution, and filtering and drying the precipitate.
