Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain readily the titled compound with high yields useful as an intermediate for di-n-propylacetic acid, a preventive and remedy for epilepsy, by hydrolyzing di-n-proplycyanoacetic acid as a raw material with an alkali metal hydroxide in a reaction medium under heating.
CONSTITUTION: A di-n-proplycyanoacetic acid or di-n-propyl cyanoacetate shown by formula I (R is H or lower alkyl) is hydrolyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide in a reaction medium, usually in a water medium under heating, to give di-n-propylmalonic acid shown by the formula II. When di-n-propyl cyanoacetate is used as the raw material, the addition of an organic solvent, e.g., ethanol, to be mixed with water as the reaction medium, is preferable.
