Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound as a raw material for heat-resistant polymers, by hydrolyzing an easily available and inexpensive octafluoroisobutyl lower alkyl ether as a raw material in the presence of an acid catalyst, reducing the hydrolysis product, and dehydrating the reduction product in the presence of an alkali catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An octafluoroisobutyl lower alkyl ether expressed by formula I (R is alkyl) is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. concentrated sulfuric acid, to prepare a lower alkyl ester of a hexafluroisobutyric acid of formula II, which is reduced, catalytically or chemically, preferably in a combination of lithium aluminum hydride with a Lewis acid, to produce hexafluoroisobutanol of formula III. The resultant compound is dehydrated in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. lithium hydroxide, under mild conditions, to give the aimed compound of formula IV.
USE: A modifier of ethylene/tetrafluoroethylene or chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymers.
