Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the purifying load of CO, HC and NOx upon a ternary catalyst and improve purification efficiency, by setting a primary air fuel ratio at a rich side and a secondary air fuel ratio at a thin lean during idling or low-load running.
CONSTITUTION: In a carburetor 4, an actual air fuel ratio is set richer than a theoretical air fuel ratio to decrease Nox during idling or low-load running in which a throttle valve 7 is entirely closed or almost entirely closed. The actual air fuel ratio is set equal to the theroretical air fuel ratio when the degree of opening of the throttle valve 7 is larger than said degree of opening. In the idling or low-load running, strong negative pressure is applied to the diaphragm chamber 18 of a control valve unit 11 through a passage 21 to open a port 14 to introduce secondary air into an exhaust passage 6. The air fuel ratio of an exhaust system is thus changed to a lean side to highly purify CO and HC by a catalyst 5.
