Abstract

PURPOSE:To form the sound frozen layer of more than scale-off thickness free from any air bubble in the slab by giving electromagnetic flow to the freezing interface of the molten steel in the mold at the specific depth by the linear motors in the mold, at the time of casting. CONSTITUTION:Linear motors 3 are provided along both long sides 2 of a slab mold 1 and are so arranged as to give the thrust thereof in the directions 4, 4', whereby the continuous electromagnetic flow 5 is given to the freezing interface. At this time, arrangement is so made that the flow 5 is given not only to the molten metal surface 7 but also to the entire part of the freezing interface of the position in the range from there up to where the slab freezing thickness in the mold grows to e.g. about 5mm.. Namely, even if the bubble-free layer or pseudo-rim layer is obtained on the slab surface by the flow 5, there is scale-off of usually about 1-2mm. before the slab enters rolling process, particularly in heating furnace. Hence, the sound frozen layer thickness is made about 5mm. in consideration for the worst case, for the prevention of gas bubbles or the exposure of easy-to-crack structure. In this way, the sound frozen layer is let to exist surely even in rolling process.
