Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture dense metallic magnetic powder capable of being easily regulated in the grain size and having superior magnetic characteristics by introducing an O2-contg. gas into a highly basic suspension of Fe(OH)2 contg. a dissolved Zn compound and heat reducing the resulting α-FeOOH in a vapor phase.
CONSTITUTION: A suspension of Fe(OH)2 contg. a dissolved Zn compound such as zinc sulfate and adjusted to ≥11pH is prepared. The amount of the added Zn compound is so adjusted as to make the atomic ratio of Al/Fe≥0.001. An O2-contg. gas such as air is introduced into said suspension in said highly basic range to form α-FeOOH. This α-FeOOH is washed, dried and converted into α-Fe2O3 by direct or heat dehydration. The α-Fe2O3 is then heated in a reducing atmosphere to obtain the desired metallic iron-base magnetic powder. The heating is usually carried out at 300W500°C in a gaseous H2 flow.
