Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a novel polycarbosilane convertible into an inorganic carbide SiC on calcination, by incorporating carbosilane bond units, siloxane bond units and metalloxane bond units in the polycarbosilane.
CONSTITUTION: A polycarbosilane consisting of (A) carbosilane bond units of formula I (the greater part of the Si atoms have 1W2 side chain groups of lower alkyl, phenyl or H), (B) siloxane bond units of formula II (having the same side chain groups as in formula I) and (C) one or two or more metalloxane bond units of formula III (M is an element, e.g. Ti or Zr) essentially. The respective bond units (A), (B) and (C) are randomly bonded in the main chain skeleton, and the polycarbosilane part is crosslinked by the bond units (B) and (C). The ratio between the total number of the bond units (A) and the total number of the bond units (B) is 4/1W200/1, and the ratio between the total number of the bond units (A) and the total number of the bond units (C) is 4/1W20,000/1. The number-average molecular weight of the polycarbosilane is 400W50,000.
