Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently mass-produce formed polystyrene foams excellent in resistance to shock and bending by setting a rigid mesh member in a metal mold cavity, filling foamable polystyrene beads into the cavity, and heating the beads to foam them. CONSTITUTION:A rigid mesh member 4 coarser than the particle size of foamable polystyrene beads 5 is set as a reinforcement in a metal mold cavity 3, and the molds are fastened together. The beads 5 are filled into the cavity 3 through a pipe 25; because the beads 5 can pass through the mesh member 4 easily, the whole of the cavity 3 is filled with the beads 5 evenly. Introduced into vacant chambers 11 and 21 through steam holes 12 and 22, steam flows into the cavity 3. The heat of steam causes the beads 5 to foam and connect together integrally, yielding a formed polystyrene bead foam which incorporates the reinforcement 4.
