Abstract

PURPOSE: To protect a thyristor from breakdown, by providing a series circuit consisting of a constant voltage element and a capacitor in parallel with the thyristor and by charging the capacitor to the control electrode of the thyristor to turn it on.
CONSTITUTION: A series circuit 8 consisting of a constant voltage element 2 and a capacitor 9 is provided in parallel with a thyristor 1 to be protected. When the charge of the capacitor 9 reaches a prescribed level, it is discharged to the control electrode of the thyristor 1 through a switching element 10 to turn on the thyristor. When a forward overvoltage higher than the limit voltage of the constant voltage element 2 is applied to the thyristor 1, the capacitor 9 is charged while, the voltage applied to the thyristor is suppressed to the limit voltage of the constant voltage element 2. When the charge of the capacitor reaches the prescribed level, the switching element 10 is closed to turn on the thyristor 1. An always stable controlled current is thus obtained independently of the wave form of the voltage applied to the thyristor. This results in protecting the thyristor from breakdown.
