Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce glass material for a light transmission body in a stable state and a high yield by hydrolyzing mist-like halogen cpds. each supported on carrier gas with steam after which the resulting oxide powder is gathered on a support and heated. CONSTITUTION:Quartz thin tube 22 with both ends open is put into POCl3 in evaporator 21, and O2 gas is supplied 23 to upper open end A of tube 22 at a high flow rate to feed POCl3 rising through tube 22 into reactor 24 in the form of mist. GaCl3, GeCl4 and SiCl4 are similarly fed into reactor 24 in the form of mist together with the POCl3. At the same time, carrier gas such as O2 is supplied to pure water 26 heated with heater 27, and steam-supporting O2 gas is spouted 29 from steam introduction pipe 28 in the form of mist to form mixed oxide powder of P, Ga, Ge and Si by hydrolysis. This powder is gathered 34 at the tip of turning and rising quartz core rod 31 and heated 32 to produce glass 33 for light transmission.
