Abstract
PURPOSE:To mass-produce signle mode optical fiber with a little light transmission loss by enclosing a glass base material, in a quartz glass tube, consisting of a core part and a clad part formed by a vapor phase axially adhering method. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4 base glass forming raw material is fed from core glass forming burner 4 to adhere a SiO2 base glass forming substance contg. a dopant such as GeO2 to the end of suport rod 2. A SiO2-contg. glass forming substance is simultaneously adhered to the outside of the core substance with clad glass forming burner 5, and cylindrical porous glass sintered body 7 is grown while rotating and raising rod 2. Body 7 is then converted into transparent glass by heating with heater 8, forming glass base material 9. Material 9 is drawn so that it is fitted to the inside diameter of quartz glass tube 11, and drawn glass base material 10 is put into tube 11, sealed, and worked into single mode optical fiber base material 12, which is drawn to produce single mode optical fiber.
