Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the growing speed of an oxide powder layer and to simplify the controllability by hydrolyzing glass component contg. raw material with an oxyhydrogen flame while spraying the material in liquefied state upon a place for depositing powder together with the flame. CONSTITUTION:Liquefied raw material for optical fiber is fed into jet pass 6 through pipes 10, 12 and sprayed from the tip of jet pipe 2. At the same time, Ar or the like, H2 and O2 are fed into jet passes 7, 8, 9 of flame protection pipe 3, H2 pipe 4 and O2 pipe 5 through pipes 19, 20, 21, respectively, and the gases are jetted from the tips of pipes 3, 4, 5. The oxyhydrogen gas is then ignited and burned to hydrolyze the mist-like raw material with the flame. While adhering the resulting oxide powder to a rotating stand plate (a place for depositing the powder), the powder is deposited in the axial direction. After forming a powder layer for a core to a predetermined length, feed of the raw material from pipe 10 is stopped, and liquefied raw material for a clad is sprayed from the tip of pipe 2 through pipe 11 and hydrolyzed. The resulting oxide powder is deposited around the rodlike core powder layer.
