Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the size accuracy of a sintered iron machine parts by sub- zero treating the machine part in a mold having predetermined dimensions to restrict the expansion due to the martensite transformation in the mold to correct it to predetermined size.
CONSTITUTION: After powder metal mixture containing 0.3W1.0% of C, 2W6% of Ni, and 0.2W2% of at least one of Mn, Mo, Cu, Cr and V is molded in a mold, the molded parts are sintered at 1,130°C for 30 minutes in endothermic converted gas. The sintered part is carburized and quenched to form residual austenite by 30W 80% in the surface layer. Then, the parts are supplied to a mold having predetermined size and dipped in advance in a liquid nitrogen to sub-zero treat the sintered article. At this time the expansion of the part due to martensite transformation is restricted in the mold to correct it to predetermined size. Therefore, the size accuracy of the part can be easily enhanced to precisely form the sintered iron machine part which has been considered to be difficult heretofore.
