Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve fuel combusting performance, in particular, the color of exhaust gas, by forming a ring-shaped recess on the inner wall surface of a rear chamber of precombustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:A ring-shaped recess 14 having a larger diameter than lower rear chamber 3 is formed on the inner wall surface of front-chamber difining member 7 at a portion thereof located near rear-chamber defining member 6. Air, introduced from orifices 5 into rear chamber 1 of precombustion chamber via its front chamber 4 and compressed as piston 11 is moved upward in cylinder liner 12, develops swirl along the inner wall surface of rear chamber 1. Here, the swirl of air is developed further by the function of recess 14, so that mixing of air with fuel injected from nozzle 9 is promoted. Thus, it is enabled to promote complete combustion of fuel and to improve fuel combusting performance, in particular, the color of exhaust gas.
