Abstract
PURPOSE: In the oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen, the water content of the reaction mixture is adjusted below a specific value at the outlet of the reactor, thus producing isobutyric acid used as food additive or the starting material to methacrylic acid in high selectivity and yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of isobutyric acid by continuous liquid-phase oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an alkali-metal containing compound, preferably an alkali metal, as sodium or potassium, salt, especially an alkali metal salt of isobutyric acid, the water content of the reaction mixture is adjusted to less than 2.5 wt%, preferably 2.0 wt%. In order to increasing the selectivity of isobutyric acid formation, the molar ratio of oxygen supplied to isobutyl aldehyde is preferably made over 0.5, much preferably over 0.54 and the oxygen concentration of the exhausted gas is adjusted in the range from 1 vol% to the range of explosion, preferably 3W8 vol%.
