Abstract
PURPOSE: In the oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen, the oxygen concentration in the exhausted gas is controlled to specific value, thus producing isobutyric acid used as food additive or starting material of methacrylic acid in high selectivity and yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of isobutyric acid by the continuous and luquid- phase oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen or a gas containing the same in the presence of an alkali metal containing compound, preferably an alkali metal, sodium or potassium, salt, especially alkali metal salt of isobutyric acid, the oxygen concentration in the exhausted gas from the reactor is controlled in the range from 1 vol% to the explosion range, preferably from 3-8 wt%. In order to increase further the selectivity of isobutyric acid, the molar ratio of oxygen to isobutyl aldehyde is preferably made over 0.5, especially over 0.54 and the water content in the reaction mixture is adjusted below 2.5 wt%, preferably 2.0 wt% at the outlet of the reactor.
