Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare isobutyric acid for use as food additives or a raw material of methacyrlic acid with high selectivity in a high yield, by exidizing isobutyl aldehyde with not less than specific feed amount based on raw materials of molecular oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutyl aldehyde is oxidized continuously by molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular exygen, preferably air, in the presence of an alkali metal-containing compound, preferably an alkali metal (K, Na, etc.) salt, particularly an alkali metal salt of isobutyric acid to prepare isobutyric acid. A mole ratio of feed oxygen to isobutyl aldehyde is not less than 0.5; 1, preferably not less than 0.54; 1. Preferably, the water content of the reaction solution at the outlet of a reactor is not more than 2.5 wt.%, preferably not more than 2 wt.% and the oxygen content in the exhaust gas is not less than 1 vol.%, not more than a range of explosion, preferably 3W8 vol.%, to increase the selectivity of isobutyric acid.
