Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the burn of the core or the blow-up of hot air due to air having invaded during the suspension of bridging, by introducing inert gas into slits of a cylinder located between the crosshead of an extruder and the heating part of a dry bridging cylinder to make a gas flow curtain. CONSTITUTION:The cylinder located between the crosshead 2 of the extruder and the heating part A of the dry bridging cylinder 3 is providee with the slits 9. The inert gas is introduced into the slits 9 while the bridging is stopped. Thereby, the gas flow curtain is made across the cylinder. For instance, the bridging cylinder 3 has a diameter of 240 mm, a heating part A of 20 m in length and a cooling part B of 30 m in length. Nitrogen gas is supplied from a gas feed port 4 to the heating part and maintained at a pressure of 9 kg/cm<2> and a temperature of 350 deg.C in the heating part while a polyethylene-coated cable is moved through the heating part. Thereby, the polyethylene is bridged. As soon as the bridging is finished, nitrogen gas is introduced at a pressure of 0.5 kg/cm<2> into the slits 9 of 5 mm in diameter, thereby making the gas flow curtain. Therefore, the interior of the cylinder is isolated from the external air, so that the air is kept from invading into the cylinder even if the end of the then bridging cylinder 3 is opened.
