Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase response speed as high as 50msec. or under and also improve thermal impact resistance by making the apparent porosities of ZrO2-Y2O3 base solid electrolyte within a range of 1.5 to 4.0%.
CONSTITUTION: 93 to 96.5mole% of ZrO2 of preferably mean particle size 4.0μ or under and purity 99.6% or over and 7.0 to 3.5mole% of Y2O3 of purity 99.8% or over are mixed and disintegrated together with sintering assistants such as SiO2, Al2O3, etc., after which the mixture is prebaked at 1300 to 1500°C. The prebaked product is disintegrated and is classified to 2μ or under. Next, the granular powder made by using the raw material of 2μ or under, polyvinyl alcohol as a binder and a spray dryer is rubber-press-molded and machined. The resultant stock is subjected to final baking at 1400 to 1650°C for 1 to 3 hours and this yields the solid electrolyte of apparent porosity 1.5 to 4.0% for detecting oxygen gas.
