Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture cation exchange membrane of excellent OH- permeation inhibiting property by the procedure in which a di- or polyamine is reacted onto the one side of a fluoro(F)-polymer membrane with sulfonylhalide groups followed by treatment at high temperature and hydrolysis, and then the membrane thus obtained is dipped in PEG followed by a heat treatment and dipping in a NaOH solution.
CONSTITUTION: A fluoro(F)-polymer with sulfonylhalide groups on its side chains is made into a film, and then a di- or polyamine is reacted to the one side of the film, in which case the thickness of the layer to be reacted with amine is preferably in the range of 0.01 to 80 %. Then, the film is heated to a temperature between 170°C and the deterioration temperature of the polymer film, preferably 190 to 300°C, and then subjected to a hydrolysis as needed. The ion exchange membrane thus obtained is then dipped in polyethyleneglycol(PEG) for 5 to 50 hours, where the PEG used is one of a molecular weight of less than 700. Then, the membrane is put between flat plates, then heated at 80 to 180°C for 30 min to 60 hours, and lastly dipped in a NaOH aqueous solution to manufacture cation exchange membrane having excellent OH ion permeation inhibiting property.
