Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture cation exchange membrane of excellent OH- permeation inhibiting property by the procedure in which an amine is reacted to the one side of a fluoro-polymer membrane with sulfonylhalide groups followed by a high temperature heat treatment and hydrolysis, and then the membrane so treated is dipped in an organic solvent, then heat treated and impregnated with a diene derivative for polymerization, and lastly dipped in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A di- or polyamine is reacted to the one side of a fluoro-polymer membrane with sulfonylhalide groups on its side chains, then heat treated at a temperature between 170°C and the deterioration temperature of the polymer membrane, proferably 190 to 300°C, and lastly hydrolized to obtain cation exchange membrane. The membrane thus obtained is dipped in an organic solvent, having a water solubility of 0.1 g/100 g of H2O at room temperature and a boiling point of more than 120°C at 760 mm Hg, and then put between flat plates to subject it to a heat treatment at 40 to 180°C.
