Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a U collecting magnetic adsorbent consisting of a slightly sol. hydrated oxide of Al, Mn, Zn or the like and iron hydroxide which adsorbent efficiently recovers U from a U ion-contg. soln. and easily separates into solid and liquid.
CONSTITUTION: An ap. soln. of a ferrous salt such as iron chloride or iron sulfate is mixed with an aq. soln. contg. a slightly sol. hydrated oxide-forming cpd. of Al, Mn, Zn, iron, rare earth elements or the like, e.g. AlCl3. To the mixed soln. is slowly added n alkali soln. such as an aq. soln. of NaOH or ammonia water, fomring precipitates of a binary complex such as iron-Al. The precipitates are then gradually oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere such as air to be converted into Fe3O4, FeOOH or their mixt. As the precipitates-forming temp. is raised, formation of ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 is facilitated. By adding an alkali in an amt. just equivalent or slightly excess to the amt. of the ferrous salt, a suspension of pH 9 may be formed and mostly converted into Fe3O4 at an oxidation temp. above 50°C. Thus, a magnetic adsorbent is obtd. having U adsorbing power and ferromagnetism.
