Abstract

1,212,126. γ-Ferric oxide. TODA KOGYO K.K. 12 June, 1968 [7 Aug., 1967], No. 27894/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] γ-Fe 2 O 3 is prepared by adding sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide to a solution of a ferrous salt, giving a suspension of ferrous hydroxide; oxidizing with a free-oxygen-containing gas e.g. air at a pH above 11, and 3-450 C., and agitating or stirring the solution to give α-FeOOH; reducing the α-FeOOH, with or without intermediate dehydration to α-Fe 2 O 3 , to Fe 3 O 4 ; and oxidizing the Fe 3 O 4 . Ferrous sulphate may be used as the ferrous salt, and the Fe(OH) 2 suspension diluted with water before oxidation. The α- FeOOH particles may be dehydrated to α-Fe 2 O 3 at above 250‹ C., and the α-FeOOH or α-Fe 2 O 3 reduced at 300-350‹ C., in a hydrogen atmosphere. The oxidation of Fe 3 O 4 to γ-Fe 2 O 3 may be at 150-230‹ C. in air. The particles retain the crystalline shape of their starting compounds throughout the series of reactions.
