Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily manufacture Fe3O4 at a low equipment cost by reacting a soln. of iron polysulfate and a ferrous salt under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A below 50wt% aq. soln. of iron polysulfate of general formula [Fe2(OH)n(SO4)3-n/2]m(where n≤2 and m≥10) is reacted with a ferrous salt in an amt. corresponding to about 1/2 eq. of ferric salt in the soln. at pH≥9 and above 40, pref. above 70°C. The pH is adjusted with an alkali such as NaOH or Na2CO3. As the ferrous, salt a ferrous salt contained in industrial waste water may be used besides FeSO4, Fe(OH)2, FeCl2, etc. Fe3O4 obtd. by this method is applicable to a magnetic tape, etc., and it may be calcined in the presence of air to give iron oxide red.
