Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polybutylene terephthalate resin composition for the housing of a household electric appliance which composition is improved in moldability and especially in drop strength and drop impact resistance by incorporating a specific polyetherester resin. CONSTITUTION: This composition comprises 100 pts.wt. polybutylene terephthalate resin and 1-99 pts.wt. polyetherester resin comprising 30-45wt.% polyether segments and 70-55wt.% polyester segments based on the sum of all these segments. A represehtative example of the polyetherester resin is produced from dimethyl terephthalate, 1,4-butanediol, and polytetramethylene oxide glycol.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a molding for a home electric appliance housing containing a polybutylene terephthalate resin (A) and a polyether ester resin (B) having a proportion of a polyether segment within a specific range. It relates to a resin composition and has good resin flow (fluidity) during molding, improved molding processability such as reduced burr generation, etc., and dramatically improved durability against drop strength and drop impact. The present invention relates to a PBT resin composition for a home appliance housing, which has been improved.

2. Description of the Related Art Household electric appliances such as telephones, personal computers, copiers, etc., have been miniaturized for the past several years so that people can easily carry them indoors and outdoors,
Further, as personalization is being promoted, there are remarkable reductions in size and further personalization of household electric appliances. It is generally known that ABS resin has been used exclusively as the molding resin for the housing of such household appliances (hereinafter referred to as home appliances).

However, although the ABS resin has a remarkably large Izod impact strength value, the ABS resin is insufficient in drop strength and durability against drop impact. For this reason, there is a drawback in that if an ABS resin is used for a housing and a heavy electric appliance in which electric parts are densely filled therein is accidentally dropped, the ABS resin housing is easily broken. Also, in the process of pursuing downsizing and weight saving of home electric appliances, even the housings of home electric appliances are required to have a thin wall and molded products including precision shaped parts. However, ABS resin has poor fluidity, so high pressure is required. There is also a drawback that it is difficult to reduce the wall thickness because injection molding has to be performed.

On the other hand, in the case of polyester resins such as polybutylene terephthalate resin, which have lower performances such as Izod impact strength and rigidity than the ABS resins, the performances such as impact resistance are improved by adding a polyether ester resin. JP-A-49-45150,
It is known from JP-A-60-35050.
However, the improved physical properties such as Izod impact strength and rigidity tend to be inferior to those of ABS resin.
It has not received much attention as a substitute resin for resins.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION The inventors of the present invention have made earnest studies on a resin material for a housing of a home electric appliance, which replaces an ABS resin, which is extremely inferior in impact resistance when dropped, and found that a polybutylene terephthalate resin (A) and a polyether segment. In the PBT resin composition consisting of the polyether ester resin (B) whose proportion is limited to a specific range, the Izod impact strength is slightly lower than that of the ABS resin, but the drop strength and the drop impact of the molded product are reduced. The inventors have found that the durability to the above is dramatically improved, the resin flow at the time of molding is good, and the molding processability is also excellent, and the present invention has been completed.

The polyether ester resin (B) is composed of 30 to 45% by weight of polyether segment and 70 to 55% by weight of polyester segment when the total of the polyether segment and the polyester segment is 100% by weight. It is essential in the present invention. When the proportion of the polyether segment is less than 30% by weight, the effect of improving the drop strength and durability against drop impact of the molded product is poor, and when it exceeds 45% by weight, the compatibility with the PBT resin (A) is reduced. Therefore, the surface appearance and mechanical properties of the molded product are inferior.
