Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 符牒をデジタル像にエンコードし、当該像を
監査してそれが上記エンコードされた像から派生したも
のであるかどうかを判断する方法及びシステムを提供す
る。 【構成】 デジタル表示と、プリント又はフィルムとの
両方において可視像内に符牒を埋め込む方法及びシステ
ムが提供される。符牒は、可視像内に分離不能に埋め込
まれ、サイズ変更や、プリント又はフィルムへの変換そ
してデジタル形態への再変換のような像変換を行っても
存続する。オリジナル像のピクセルの中から符牒ポイン
トを選択し、符牒ポイント及びそのまわりのピクセルの
ピクセル値をデジタルスキャナで検出し得る量だけ調整
し、この調整された符牒ポイントがデジタル符牒を形成
し、これが、像から派生した当該像を後で識別するため
に記憶される。符牒は、ピクセル値の連続スペースにお

【発明の詳細な説明】

【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、符牒（シグニチュア）
をデジタル像にエンコードしそしてデジタルの当該像を
監査してそれがエンコードされた像から派生したものか
どうかを判断する方法及びシステムに係る。

【従来の技術】伝統的な印刷物や写真媒体において種々
の像が一般に多数のユーザに配布される。例えば、一般
社会に関する印刷物、写真及びフィルムクリップが媒体
の中で配布されることが挙げられる。所有者は、印刷物
や電子媒体におけるそれら像の使用を監査したいことが
あり、従って、印刷物、フィルム及びデジタル像を分析
して、それらが所有者から直接入手したものかそれらの
像から派生したものかを判断する方法が必要となる。例
えば、像の所有者は、その像のアクセス又は使用を制限
したいことがある。このような制限を監視及び実施する
ために、当該像が所有者の像からコピー又は派生された
ものであることを照合する方法をもつことが有用であ
る。この立証方法は、正確である上に、妨害のできない
ものでなければならない。更に、この方法は、サイズ変
更、回転、切断、又は他の方法で若干変更された無断コ
ピーを検出できるものでなければならない。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】コンピュータの分野で
は、データの出所を識別するために、デジタルの符牒が
像以外のデジタルデータに適用されている。これら公知
のデジタル符牒は、種々の理由でデジタルの像データに
は適用されていない。その１つの理由は、これら公知の
デジタル符牒が適用されたデータを変更した場合、これ
らデジタル符牒が失われてしまうからである。デジタル
像は、それらがプリントされ、走査され、コピーされ、
又は写真撮影されるたびに、使用する機械的な再生装置
により意図しない「ノイズ」が形成されるために、しば
しば変更される。更に、像をサイズ変更、回転、切断、
又は他のやり方で意図的に変更することもしばしば所望
される。従って、既存のデジタル符牒は、デジタル像に

め込まれる。符牒ポイントは候補ポイントの中から選択

わりのピクセル値を調整することによりデータビットが
エンコードされる。符牒は、像内に冗長に埋め込まれ、
その冗長表示のいずれを用いても符牒を識別できるのが
好ましい。符牒は、当該像の識別に後で使用するために
記憶される。

るには、当該像が正規化され、即ちオリジナル像と同じ
サイズ、回転及び輝度レベルのものとなるよう確保する

【実施例】本発明は、オリジナル像に符牒を埋め込み、
符牒付けされた像を形成する方法及びシステムに関す
る。好ましい実施例は、オリジナル像において多数の候
補ポイントを選択しそしてこれらの候補ポイントの中か
ら多数の符牒ポイントを選択することを含む。これら符
牒ポイントは若干変更されて符牒を形成する。符牒ポイ
ントは、当該像を監査してその当該像が符牒付けされた
像から派生したものであるかどうかを判断するように後
で使用するために記憶される。
【０００９】符牒は、像の可視ドメインにエンコードさ
れ、従って、像の一部となり、符牒についての公知の知
識では検出もできないし除去することもできない。重要
な点は、符牒によって表された変更が人間の目で見るに
は僅か過ぎるが、通常のデジタル像スキャナでは容易に
且つ一貫して認識できるものであり、その後、ソフトウ
ェアアルゴリズムによって符牒を抽出し、解読しそして
照合することができることである。
【００１０】像以外のデータについて使用された公知の
符牒方法とは異なり、この符牒は、可視像は保持するが
デジタルデータは完全に変更してしまうことのある著し
い像変換を行っても存続する。許される特定の変換は、
像をより大きく又はより小さくサイズ変更したり、像を
回転したり、色、輝度及び／又はコントラストを均一に
調整したり、制限された切断を行ったりすることを含
む。重要なことは、像を紙やフィルムにプリントしたり
それを再走査してデジタル形態にしたりするプロセスを
行っても符牒が存続することである。
【００１１】図１に示されたコンピュータシステム１０
は、本発明を実施するのに使用されるものである。この
コンピュータシステム１０は、通常の相補的なメモリ及
び論理回路を有するコンピュータ１２と、ディスプレイ
モニタ１４と、キーボード１６と、マウス１８又は他の
指示装置とを備えている。又、コンピュータシステム
は、写真や絵のようなオリジナル像を表すデジタル像を
形成するのに使用されるデジタルスキャナ２０も備えて
いる。典型的に、絵のような繊細な像は、デジタル形態
へと走査される前に、プリントやフィルムに変換され
る。１つの実施例において、プロセッサから出力される
デジタル像をプリントするためにプリンタ２２がコンピ
ュータ１２に接続される。更に、デジタル像は、後でリ
モート位置で表示するためにフロッピーディスクのよう
な記憶媒体２３へデータフォーマットで出力することも
できる。通常のコンピュータ用プリンタ、Ｘ−Ｙプロッ
タ又はディスプレイスクリーンのようないかなるデジタ
ルディスプレイデバイスが使用されてもよい。
【００１２】コンピュータ１２へのスキャナ２０の出力
の一例が、図２に示すデジタル像２４である。より詳細
には、スキャナは、デジタル像を表すデータを出力し、
コンピュータは、デジタル像２４をディスプレイモニタ
１４に表示させる。ここで用いる「デジタル像」という
用語は、デジタル像を表すデジタルデータ、モニタ又は
他のディスプレイスクリーンに表示されるデジタル像、
及びプリンタ２２又はリモートプリンタによってプリン
トされるデジタル像を指すものとする。
【００１３】デジタル像２４は、種々のピクセル値を有
する多数のピクセル２４を用いて描かれている。グレイ
スケール像２４においては、ピクセル値が、黒から白へ
と変化する輝度レベルを表す輝度値である。カラー像に
おいては、ピクセルがカラー値及び輝度値を有し、その
両方がピクセル値である。カラー値は、ベクトルによる
カラーの表示においていかなる成分の値も含むことがで
きる。図３は、ピクセル２６の配列体の形態でデジタル
像２４Ａを示している。各ピクセルには、１つ以上のピ
クセル値が組み合わされ、これらは、図３に示す例で
は、０から１５までの輝度値である。
【００１４】図２に示すデジタル像２４は、数千のピク
セルを含んでいる。図３に示されたデジタル像２４Ａ
は、２２５個のピクセルを含んでいる。本発明は、数百
万個のピクセルを有する像に使用されるのが好ましい。
それ故、ここでは、当然、本発明の有用性について簡単
に説明することにする。
【００１５】本発明の好ましい実施例によれば、オリジ
ナル像内において多数の候補ポイントが位置決めされ
る。これら候補ポイントの中から符牒ポイントが選択さ
れ、符牒を形成するように変更される。符牒は、任意の
数の符牒ポイントのパターンである。好ましい実施例で
は、符牒が、１６ビットないし３２ビットの長さの二進
数である。符牒ポイントは、像内のどこにあってもよい
が、できるだけ目立たないように選択するのが好まし
い。符牒ポイントの数は、符牒のビット数より相当に大
きいのが好ましい。これにより、符牒を像において冗長
にエンコードすることができる。６ないし３２ビットの
符牒を用いる場合、像に対して多数の符牒を得るため
に、５０ないし２００の符牒ポイントが好ましい。
【００１６】本発明の好ましい実施例では、像内の相対
的な最大及び最小（全体的に極端なものと称する）を見
つけることにより、候補ポイントが位置決めされる。こ
れらの極端なものは、局部的に極端な輝度又は色を表し
ている。図４は、相対的に極端なものが何を意味してい
るかを示している。図４は、デジタル像の小さい部分の
ピクセル値を示すグラフである。このグラフの縦軸は、
ピクセル値を表しており、一方、横軸は、デジタル像の
１本の線に沿ったピクセル位置を示している。３２で示
したピクセル値の小さな変動は、ピクセル間で輝度又は
色が僅かに変化するだけのデジタル像部分を表してい
る。相対的な最大値３４は、像の所与のエリアに対して
最も高いピクセル値を有するピクセルを表している。同
様に、相対的な最小値３６は、像の所与のエリアに対し
て最も低いピクセル値を有するピクセルを表している。
【００１７】相対的に極端な値が、２つの主たる理由で
好ましい符牒ポイントとなる。先ず第１に、それらは、
簡単な良く知られた処理によって容易に探索される。そ
して第２に、それらは符牒ポイントをあまり目立たない
ようにエンコードできるようにする。
【００１８】相対的に極端な値を決定する最も簡単な方
法の１つは、「平均の差」の技術を使用することであ
る。この技術は、各ピクセル２６のまわりの所定の近隣
を使用するものであり、図２及び３には小さな近隣２８
と大きな近隣３０とが示されている。ここに示す例で
は、これら近隣は簡単化のために方形であるが、好まし
い実施例では、円形の近隣が使用される。この技術は、
小さな近隣の平均ピクセル値と、大きな近隣の平均ピク
セル値との差を決定する。この差が周囲のピクセルにつ
いての差に比して大きい場合に、最初のピクセル値が相
対的な最大又は最小となる。
【００１９】図３の像を一例として用いると、ピクセル
２６Ａに対する平均の差は次のように決定される。３ｘ
３ピクセルの小さな近隣２８Ａ内のピクセル値を加える
と、６９となり、それを９ピクセルで除算すると、平均
が７．６７となる。５ｘ５ピクセルの大きな近隣３０Ａ
内のピクセル値を加えると、２１９となり、これを２５
ピクセルで除算すると、平均が８．７６となり、従っ
て、平均値の差は−１．０９となる。同様に、小さな近
隣２８Ｇの平均は１０．０であり、大きな近隣３０Ｇの
平均は９．８であり、それ故、ピクセル２６Ｇの平均の
差は、０．２となる。ピクセル２６Ｂないし２６Ｆにつ

に相対的な最大があり、その平均の差１．５９は、その
行において検査した他のピクセルに対する平均の差より
大きい。ピクセル２６Ｄが単なる小さな変動ではなくて
相対的な最大であるかどうかを判断するためには、その
平均の差を、大きなエリアにおいてそれを取り巻いてい
るピクセルに対する平均の差と比較しなければならな
い。
【００２０】いずれの側でも像サイズの１０％以内の極
端な値は、符牒ポイントとして使用しないのが好まし
い。これは、像の境界エリアを切断する規定によって符
牒ポイントが失われるのを阻止する。又、規則的なパタ
ーンで現れるものではなくて、ランダムに且つ広く間隔
が空いている相対的に極端な値が使用されるのが好まし
い。
【００２１】平均の差の技術又は他の既知の技術を用い
ると、非常に多数の極端な値が得られるが、その数は、
像のピクセル密度及びコントラストに基づく。このよう
にして見つかった極端な値の全数の中で、好ましい実施
例では、５０ないし２００の符牒ポイントが選択され
る。これは、ユーザが、キーボード１６、マウス１８、
又は他の指示装置で、ディスプレイモニタ１４に表示さ
れる極端な値の中から各符牒ポイントを選択することに
よって手動で行われる。これらの極端な値は、デジタル
像として表示されて、マウス又はピクセルを指す他の指
示装置を用いて各ポイントを選択するようにしてもよい
し、或いはこれらの値が座標のリストとして表示され
て、キーボード、マウス又は他の指示装置によって選択
するようにしてもよい。或いは又、符牒ポイントをラン
ダムに選択するか又は予めプログラムされたパターンに
基づいて選択するようにコンピュータ１２をプログラム
することができる。
【００２２】像内の各符牒ポイントにおいてはそのポイ
ントのピクセル値及びそのまわりのピクセル値を調整す
ることにより１ビットの２進データがエンコードされ
る。像は、その符牒ポイントにおけるピクセル値を僅か
に好ましくは２％ないし１０％だけ正又は負に調整する
ことにより、２進０又は１を表すように変更される。約
５ｘ５ないし１０ｘ１０の格子においてその各々の符牒
ポイントを取り巻いているピクセルは、その符牒ポイン
トにおける新たな値への連続的な移行を確保するように
比例的に調整されるのが好ましい。符牒ポイントにおい
て多数のビットがエンコードされて、その像に対する符
牒であるパターンが形成される。
【００２３】好ましい実施例では、符牒が全ての符牒ポ
イントのパターンである。当該像を監査するときに、当
該像における統計学的に著しい数の潜在的な符牒ポイン
トがその符牒付けされた像における対応する符牒ポイン
トに一致する場合には、当該像は、その符牒付けされた
像から派生されたものと考えられる。統計学的に著しい
数とは、１００％より若干低いものであるが、その当該
像がその符牒付けされた像から派生したことが適度に確
信されるものであれば充分である。
【００２４】別の実施例では、符牒が冗長パターンを用
いてエンコードされ、このパターンは、符牒ポイントの
サブセットのみを用いて確実に検索できるやり方で符牒
ポイントの中に符牒を分布させるものである。１つの実
施例では、単に、符牒の厳密な複製が所定数だけエンコ
ードされる。又、エラー修正コードのような他の冗長表
示方法を使用してもよい。
【００２５】将来像を監査して、それらが符牒付けされ
た像に一致するかどうかを判断するために、符牒はデー
タベースに記憶され、そこで、オリジナル像に関連され
る。符牒は、各符牒ポイントのビット値をその符牒ポイ
ントのｘ−ｙ座標に関連させることにより記憶すること
ができる。符牒は、符牒付けされた像とは個別に記憶さ
れてもよいし、その一部として記憶されてもよい。この
とき、符牒付けされた像はデジタル形態で分布される。
【００２６】上記したように、符牒付けされた像は、派
生した像を形成するように変換及び操作することができ
る。派生した像は、サイズ変更や、回転や、色、輝度及
び／又はコントラストの調整や、切断や、プリント又は
フィルムへの変換といった種々の変換によって符牒付け
された像から派生される。派生は、多数の段階又はプロ
セスで行ってもよいし、又は符牒付けされた像を単に直
接コピーするだけでもよい。
【００２７】所有者が追跡しようとする像の派生は、像
の解像度及び一般的な質を実質的に保持する使用目的の
みを含むものと仮定する。９０％のサイズ縮小、著しい
変色又は明確なピクセル値の低下は、符牒を破壊する
が、監査をしようと思わないように像の意義や価値も低
下させる。
【００２８】好ましい実施例に基づいて当該像を監査す
るために、ユーザは、その当該像が複製であると思われ
るオリジナル像を識別する。プリント又はフィルム像の
場合には、当該像を走査し、デジタル像ファイルを形成
する。デジタル像の場合は、走査が不要である。この当
該デジタル像は、以下に述べる技術を使用して、無修正
のオリジナル像と同じサイズ、及び同じ全輝度、コント
ラスト及びカラープロファイルに対して正規化される。
この当該像は、以下に述べる方法によって分析されて、
符牒がもしあればそれを抽出し、その像に対して記憶さ
れた符牒と比較する。
【００２９】この正規化プロセスは、当該像に対して既
になされた変換を取り消し、それをオリジナル像の解像
度及び見掛けにできるだけ近づくように戻す一連のステ
ップを含む。当該像は上記したように操作及び変換され
ていると仮定する。当該像をオリジナル像に整列するた
めに、好ましい実施例では、オリジナル像内のポイント
に対応する３つ以上のポイントを当該像から選択する。
当該像のこれらの３つ以上のポイントは、オリジナル像
の対応するポイントと整列される。選択されなかった当
該像のポイントは、選択されたポイントの整列を受け入
れるように必要に応じて回転及びサイズ変更される。
【００３０】例えば、図５は、図２のオリジナル像２４
よりも小さいデジタル当該像３８を示している。この当
該像をサイズ変更するために、ユーザは、マウス１８又
は他の指示装置を用いて当該像の口４０Ｂ、耳４２Ｂ及
び目４４Ｂのような３つのポイントを指す。単一のピク
セルを正確に指すことは通常は困難であるから、コンピ
ュータは、ユーザが指したピクセルに最も近い極端値を
選択する。ユーザは、オリジナル像の口４０Ａ、耳４２
Ａ及び目４４Ａを指す。コンピュータ１２は、ポイント
４０Ａ、４２Ａ及び４４Ａがオリジナル像において互い
に位置設定されているのと同様にポイント４０Ｂ、４２
Ｂ及び４４Ｂが互いに位置設定されるよう確保するため
に、当該像を必要に応じてサイズ変更及び回転する。残
りのピクセルは、これらポイント４０Ｂ、４２Ｂ及び４
４Ｂの再位置設定に比例して位置設定し直される。これ
ら３つのポイントを整列することにより、各ピクセルを
個々に整列する必要なく、当該像全体がオリジナル像と
整列される。
【００３１】当該像が整列された後の次の段階は、当該
像の輝度、コントラスト及び／又はカラーを正規化する
ことである。この正規化は、オリジナル像の値分布プロ
ファイルに一致するように当該像のピクセル値を調整す
ることを含む。これは当該像を整列するのに用いたもの
と同様の技術によって行われる。当該像におけるピクセ
ルのサブセットは、オリジナル像における対応ピクセル
に等しくなるように調整される。このサブセットにない
ピクセルは、サブセットのピクセルに対して行われた調
整に比例して調整される。符牒ポイントに対応する当該
像のピクセルはサブセットのピクセル内にあってはなら
ない。さもなくば、当該像の符牒ポイントは、オリジナ
ル像の対応するピクセルに等しく調整されるときに、検
出から隠れてしまう。
【００３２】好ましい実施例では、サブセットは、当該
像の最も明るいピクセルと最も暗いピクセルを含む。こ
れらのピクセルは、オリジナル像内の対応するピクセル
の輝度値に等しい輝度値をもつように調整される。符牒
ポイントを検出できるよう確保するために、上記した符
牒埋め込みプロセス中には、オリジナル像の最も明るい
ピクセル及び最も暗いピクセルの中から符牒ポイントを
選択してはならない。例えば、重畳しないよう確保する
ために、最も明るいものと最も暗いものの５％未満の中
から符牒ポイントを選択した後に、サブセットを調整す
るために最も明るいものと最も暗いものの３％の中から
ピクセルを使用することができる。
【００３３】当該像は、完全に正規化した後に、オリジ
ナル像と比較されるのが好ましい。これら像を比較する
１つの方法は、一方の像を他方から差し引くことであ
る。この差し引きにより、当該像に存在した符牒ポイン
トを含むデジタル像が形成される。これらの符牒ポイン
トは、もしあれば、符牒付けされた像に対して記憶され
た符牒ポイントと比較される。符牒ポイントが一致しな
い場合には、当該像は、その符牒付けされた像から実質
的に変更されていない限り、その符牒付けされた像から
派生した像ではない。
【００３４】別の実施例において、正規化された当該像
は、これをオリジナル像から差し引くのではなくて、符
牒付けされた像と直接比較される。この比較は、当該像
を符牒付けされた像から差し引くことを含む。この差し
引きによってほとんど又は全く像が生じない場合には、
その当該像は符牒付けされた像に等しく、それ故、符牒
付けされた像から派生したものである。
【００３５】更に別の実施例では、当該像全体を正規化
するのではなく、各潜在的な符牒ポイントを取り巻く当
該像の部分のみが、オリジナル像の対応する部分と同じ
一般的解像度及び見掛けのものであるように正規化され
る。これは、当該像の各潜在的な符牒ポイントを選択し
そして各潜在的な符牒ポイントのまわりの部分を選択す
ることによって行われる。各選択された部分の正規化
は、当該像全体の正規化について上記したものと同様の
方法に従って行われる。
【００３６】各選択された部分を個々に正規化すると、
当該像の各潜在的な符牒ポイントを符牒付けされた像の
対応する符牒ポイントと直接比較することができる。潜
在的な符牒ポイントのピクセル値を、その潜在的な符牒
ポイントのまわりの複数のピクセルのピクセル値で平均
化することにより、各潜在的な符牒ポイントごとに平均
値が計算されるのが好ましい。各符牒ごとに計算された
平均値は、符牒付けされた像の対応する符牒ポイントと
直接比較される。
【００３７】上記したように当該像から符牒を正規化し
抽出する方法は輝度値に関与していたが、カラー値につ
いても同様の方法を用いることができる。輝度値を変更
することによって正規化するのに代わって又はそれに加
えて、当該像のカラー値を、オリジナルカラー像の対応
するカラー値に等しく調整することもできる。しかしな
がら、符牒をエンコードしたり又はカラー像から符牒を
抽出したりするためにカラー値を調整する必要はない。
カラー像は、輝度値及びカラー値を含むピクセル値を有
するピクセルを使用する。デジタル符牒は、ピクセル値
が輝度値であるか、カラー値であるか又は他の形式のピ
クセル値であるかに係わりなく、いかなるピクセル値で
もエンコードできる。変更が人間の目に見えることなく
容易に変更を行えることから、輝度値が好ましい。
【００３８】以上、本発明の特定の実施例を解説の目的
で詳細に説明したが、本発明の精神及び範囲から逸脱せ
ずに種々の変更がなされ得ることが明らかであろう。故
に、本発明は、特許請求の範囲のみによって限定される
ものとする。

Claims (39)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 輝度値をもつピクセルを有するオリジナ
    ル像について像符牒を処理する方法において、 上記オリジナル像のピクセルの中から複数の候補ポイン
    トを位置決めし、 上記候補ポイントの中から第１の複数の符牒ポイントを
    選択し、 符牒付けした像を形成するように上記符牒ポイントのピ
    クセル値を調整し、その調整された符牒ポイントのピク
    セル値は、上記符牒付けした像に対する符牒を形成し、
    そして上記符牒を将来の識別のために記憶する、という
    段階を備えたことを特徴とする方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 上記候補ポイントは、上記オリジナル像
    において相対的に極端なものを探索することによって位
    置決めし、そして上記選択段階は、その極端なものの中
    から符牒ポイントを選択することを含む請求項１に記載
    の方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 上記極端なものは、オリジナル像のピク
    セルの輝度値の相対的な最小又は最大である請求項２に
    記載の方法。

    た符牒ポイントのピクセル値は、像に対する符牒を形成
    し、そして上記符牒を将来の識別のために記憶する、と
    いう段階を備えたことを特徴とする方法。

    なものを探索することを更に含み、そして上記選択段階
    は、その極端なものの中から符牒ポイントを選択するこ
    とを含む請求項６に記載の方法。

  22. 【請求項２２】 上記分析段階は、符牒付けされた像の
    符牒ポイントに対応する当該像の潜在的な符牒ポイント
    を選択し、その潜在的な符牒ポイント及びそのまわりの
    複数のピクセルのピクセル値の平均値を計算し、そして
    この平均値を符牒付けされた像の対応する符牒ポイント
    のピクセル値と比較することを含む請求項１４に記載の
    方法。
  23. 【請求項２３】 ピクセル値をもつピクセルを有する当
    該像が、集合的に符牒を形成するように調整されたピク
    セル値をもつピクセルを有する符牒付けされた像を構成
    するか或いはそこから派生されたものであるかを判断す
    る方法において、 当該像がオリジナル像又は符牒付けされた像に対して正
    規化されるように確保し、そして符牒付けされた像の符
    牒を、その符牒のピクセルに対応する当該像の潜在的な
    符牒ポイントと比較するという段階を備えたことを特徴
    とする方法。
  24. 【請求項２４】 上記確保する段階は、当該像をオリジ
    ナル像又は符牒付けされた像に対して正規化することを
    含む請求項２３に記載の方法。
  25. 【請求項２５】 上記正規化段階は、当該像を信号像又
    はオリジナル像と整列することを含む請求項２４に記載
    の方法。
  26. 【請求項２６】 上記整列段階は、当該像において３つ
    以上のピクセルを選択しそしてその３つ以上のピクセル
    をオリジナル像又は符牒付けされた像における同数のピ
    クセルと整列させることを含む請求項２５に記載の方
    法。
  27. 【請求項２７】 上記当該像及びオリジナル像のピクセ
    ル値は輝度値を含みそして上記正規化段階は、上記当該
    像におけるピクセルのサブセットの輝度値をオリジナル
    像におけるピクセルの対応するサブセットの輝度値に等
    しく調整することを含む請求項２４に記載の方法。
  28. 【請求項２８】 上記比較段階は、当該像をオリジナル
    像から差し引いて、それにより生じる像を得、そしてそ
    れを記憶されたデジタル符牒と比較することを含む請求
    項２３に記載の方法。
  29. 【請求項２９】 上記比較段階は、当該像を符牒付けさ
    れた像と比較することを含む請求項２３に記載の方法。
  30. 【請求項３０】 上記比較段階は、符牒のピクセルに対
    応する潜在的な符牒ポイントを選択し、その潜在的な各
    符牒ポイント及びそのまわりの複数のピクセルのピクセ
    ル値の平均値を計算し、そして各平均値を符牒付けされ
    た像の対応する符牒ポイントのピクセル値と比較するこ
    とを含む請求項２３に記載の方法。
  31. 【請求項３１】 ピクセル値をもつピクセルを有するオ
    リジナル像について像符牒を処理するシステムにおい
    て、 デジタル像をユーザに表示するためのディスプレイデバ
    イスと、 上記オリジナル像のピクセルの中から複数の符牒ポイン
    トを選択するための選択手段と、 上記ディスプレイデバイス及び選択手段と通信する計算
    デバイスとを具備し、この計算デバイスは、符牒付けさ
    れた像を形成するように符牒ポイントのピクセル値を調
    整し、この調整された符牒ポイントのピクセル値は、上
    記符牒付けされた像に関連する符牒を形成し、そして上
    記計算デバイスと通信するメモリを更に具備し、このメ
    モリは、上記計算デバイスから符牒を受け取って、その
    符牒を将来の識別のために記憶することを特徴とするシ
    ステム。
  32. 【請求項３２】 上記計算デバイスは、上記オリジナル
    像のピクセルの中から候補ポイントを探索する位置決め
    手段を備え、そして上記選択手段は、これら候補ポイン
    トの中から符牒ポイントを選択する請求項３１に記載の
    システム。
  33. 【請求項３３】 上記選択手段は、上記ディスプレイデ
    バイス及び計算デバイスに作動的に接続されたポインタ
    を備えていて、ユーザが、ディスプレイデバイスに表示
    された候補ポイントの中から符牒ポイントを選択できる
    ようにし、そして計算デバイスは、符牒付けされた像に
    関連した符牒を形成するように選択される符牒ポイント
    を変更する請求項３２に記載のシステム。
  34. 【請求項３４】 上記位置決め手段は、オリジナル像に
    おいてピクセル値の極端なものを探索する手段を備え、
    これら極端なものが候補ポイントである請求項３２に記
    載のシステム。
  35. 【請求項３５】 上記計算デバイスは、上記符牒付けさ
    れた像から派生した当該像を識別する手段を備えている
    請求項３１に記載のシステム。
  36. 【請求項３６】 当該像をオリジナル像又は符牒付けさ
    れた像で正規化するための正規化手段を更に備えた請求
    項３５に記載のシステム。
  37. 【請求項３７】 上記正規化手段は、上記ディスプレイ
    デバイス及び計算デバイスに作動的に接続されたポイン
    タを備えていて、ユーザが、ディスプレイデバイスに表
    示された当該像のピクセルの中から整列ポイントを選択
    できるようにし、そして計算デバイスは、選択された整
    列ポイントを受け取り、それに対して当該像をオリジナ
    ル像又は符牒付けされた像と整列させる請求項３６に記
    載のシステム。
  38. 【請求項３８】 上記計算デバイスは、正規化された当
    該像をオリジナル像又は符牒付けされた像と比較するた
    めの比較手段を備えている請求項３６に記載のシステ
    ム。
  39. 【請求項３９】 上記計算デバイスは、 符牒付けされた像の符牒ポイントに対応する当該像にお
    いて潜在的な符牒ポイントを選択するための当該選択手
    段と、 上記潜在的な符牒ポイント及びそのまわりの複数のピク
    セルのピクセル値の平均値を計算する平均化手段と、 その平均値を、上記符牒付けされた像の対応する符牒ポ
    イントのピクセル値と比較するための比較手段とを備え
    ている請求項３６に記載のシステム。
