Description
カソード反応:1.5O2+6H++6e−→3H2O
全反応:CH3OH+1.5O2→2H2O+CO2
前記反応式に示されるように、アノードではメタノールと水とが反応して二酸化炭素、6つの水素イオン及び6つの電子が生成する。生成した水素イオンは、アノードとカソード間に位置する水素イオン伝導性電解質膜を通ってカソードに移動する。カソードでは、水素イオン、外部回路を介して伝えられた電子及び酸素が反応して水が生成する。DMFCの全反応はメタノールと酸素とが反応して水と二酸化炭素とを生成することであり、この反応でメタノールの燃焼熱に該当するエネルギーの相当量が電気エネルギーに転換される。このような反応を促進させるため、アノードとカソードには触媒が含まれる。

前記反応式(1)において、律速段階はCH3Oの分解段階であることが知られている(M.Mavrikakis and M.A.Barteau,J.of Molecular Catalysis A,131,135(1998))。CH3Oの分解温度は触媒と酸素との結合の強さに比例し、触媒と水素との結合の強さに反比例する(M.A.Barteau,Catal.Lett.8,175(1991))。
前記反応式(2)において、(g)は気体状態を示し、(a)は触媒の表面に吸着した状態を示す。酸素還元反応を促進させるためには、酸素分子が触媒表面によく吸着し、さらに吸着した酸素分子が酸素原子に容易に分解しなければならない。このためには、酸素と触媒との結合が強くなければならない。また、分解した酸素原子から水への転化を促進させるためには、水素が触媒表面から容易に脱着して酸素原子またはOH基に結合しなければならない。このため、触媒と水素との結合が弱くなければならない。
Claims (4)
- Cu及びCd;Ni及びCd;Ag及びCd;Zn及びNiまたはZn及びCuを含有する金属合金を含み、前記金属合金の構成成分の原子比が1:1であり、前記金属合金の結晶構造が面心立方構造であり、前記金属合金は白金より強い酸素結合力および白金より弱い水素結合力を有することを特徴とする直接メタノール燃料電池のカソード用触媒。
- 導電性を有して微細孔が形成されている多孔性担体と、
前記担体の細孔内に位置する請求項1による触媒とを含むことを特徴とする直接メタノール燃料電池のカソード用担持触媒。 - 前記担体は活性炭、グラファイトまたはメソ細孔炭素であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の燃料電池のカソード用担持触媒。
- 酸化剤の還元反応の起こるカソード、燃料の酸化反応の起こるアノード及び前記カソードとアノード間に位置する電解質膜を含む燃料電池において、
前記カソードは請求項2による担持触媒を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池。
