Description
本発明は、光学的歪み及び温度センサに関し、より具体的には、ブラッグ回折格子を有している埋封型ファイバを用いた光学センサに関するものである。
背景技術
歪みセンサの分野においては、ブラッグ回折格子といった反射要素を有するオプティカルファイバを構造体内に埋封することが知られており、これらのものとしては、ともにメルツ(Meltz)等に付与された米国特許第4,806,012号、題名“分散され、かつ、空間分解能を有するオプティカルファイバ型歪みゲージ”、及び米国特許第4,761,073号、題名“分散され、かつ、空間分解能を有するオプティカルファイバ型歪みゲージ”、を挙げることができる。回折格子を有する上記ファイバは、また、“ファイバセンサ”とも呼ばれている。オプティカルファイバセンサは、また、複合材料、又は、構造体中に埋封させることが可能であり、上記構造体中での歪み及び/又は温度測定を可能としている。
典型的には、波長幅の広い光源からの光線が上記ファイバ中に入射され、上記回折格子は、上記光源からの光のうちの狭い波長幅の部分のみを反射する。上記回折格子の反射波長(すなわち、反射が生じる波長の極大値という)は、上記回折格子のある位置での歪み変化と、温度変化と、の双方に依存してシフトする。その結果、温度変化に独立して歪みを決定するためには、上記センサは、別の測定デバイス(例えば、別の回折格子部分といった)を必要としていた。従って、上記配置における単一の回折格子(又は、センサ)では、温度で補償した歪み測定はこれまで不可能であり、また、歪みで補償した温度測定も不可能であった。従って、構造体内に埋封されたセンサにおいても、単一のセンサによる温度及び歪み測定は不可能であった。
従って、温度と歪みの双方が決定可能な、単一の回折格子によって光学的信号が得られる埋封型オプティカルファイバセンサが望まれていた。
発明の開示
本発明の目的は、単一の回折格子によって温度及び歪みの双方を測定可能な、埋封型オプティカルファイバセンサを提供することにある。
本発明によれば、埋封型オプティカルセンサは、入射光を規制し、かつ、戻り光を規制するための光学的導波路と、上記入射光の光路内の上記導波路内に配設され、第一の横方向軸と、上記第一の横方向軸に垂直な第二の横方向軸と、を有する少なくとも一つの反射要素と、を有しており、かつ、上記第一の横方向軸と上記第二の横方向軸とは双方とも、長手方向軸に対して垂直とされているものであって、上記反射要素に対して力を加える横方向歪み手段を有し、上記反射要素内に不等方横方向歪みを加え、かつ、上記不均等横方向歪みは、上記反射要素内に複屈折を生じさせるとともに、温度により上記不等方横方向歪みが変化して、温度による複屈折の変化を生じさせており、上記複屈折は、上記反射要素の第一の偏光軸に沿った上記反射要素波長の第一ピークを与え、かつ、上記反射要素の第二の偏光軸に沿った上記反射要素波長の第二ピークを与えるようにされており、上記第一ピークと上記第二ピークとの間には波長差が存在するために波長間隔が形成されており、かつ、上記第一ピークと上記第二ピークとの間の中間が平均波長とされ、さらに、上記波長間隔は、温度と、歪みと、に応答性を有しており、これらの応答性は、上記平均波長に対する応答性とは異なっているため、温度測定と、歪み測定と、を上記単一の反射要素によっても独立して行うことを可能とするものである。
本発明によれば、さらに、上記横方向歪み手段は、上記反射要素を取り囲んだ複合構造を有している。さらに本発明によれば、上記複合構造は、上記反射要素に対して所定のように配列された複数の強化フィラメントと、結合材料と、を有しており、上記複合構造を互いに保持するようになっている。
さらに本発明に従えば、上記反射要素に隣接する複数の上記フィラメントは、上記反射要素の上記長手方向軸とは平行とならないように配向されている。さらに、本発明によれば、上記複合構造は、複数の層を有しており、それぞれの層は、複数の上記フィラメントと、上記結合材料と、を含んでなることを特徴とする。
さらに、本発明によれば、上記導波路は、オプティカルファイバとされ、かつ、上記反射要素は、ブラッグ回折格子とされる。
本発明は、従来の埋封型オプティカルファイバ歪みセンサ及びオプティカルファイバ温度センサを著しく改善することができるが、これは、単一の回折格子によって温度と歪みとを決定することのできる信号を与えることを可能とし、従って温度変化などを補償するための回折格子や、その他のセンサの数を低減させることができる。この様にして、所望する補償点において上記温度を測定できることから、温度補償歪み測定装置の一体性を向上させることができる。この結果、本発明によれば、上記それぞれの回折格子による温度測定、温度補償された歪み測定、又は、単一回折格子による歪みと温度との分離測定等が可能となる。
本発明の上記目的及びその他の効果、特徴及び特徴については、後述する詳細な説明と、添付の図面の記載と、によってより詳細に説明する。

発明の最良の実施態様
図1には、埋封型オプティカルファイバセンサをしてしているが、このオプティカルファイバセンサは、複数の層10〜20(詳細は後述する)と、上記複数の層10と12との間に埋封されている非複屈折オプティカルファイバ21と、を有している。上記ファイバ21は、単一空間モードを有するゲルマニア−ドープの直径約6ミクロンのシリカコアと、シリカクラッディングを有しており、その全外径(コア及びクラッディング)は、約125ミクロンである。所望により、これ以外のファイバ組成及びサイズも使用することができる。また、バッファコーティングを有するファイバ、又は、バッファコーティングを有さないファイバも、所望により使用することができる。上記ファイバ21のコアは、ブラッグ回折格子といった少なくとも一つの反射要素を有しており、これについては、前述したメルツ等による複数の米国特許に開示のものと同様である。
上記複数の層10〜20は、それぞれグラファイト製の断面が円形の強化フィラメント22を有しており、このフィラメントは、所定の方向において上記複数の層10〜20内に埋封されている。それぞれの層10〜20内の上記複数のフィラメント22は、実質的に互いに平行されている。上記フィラメント22の間は、工業的に知られている熱硬化性エポキシ樹脂等のポリママトリクス24領域である。所望により他の材料もフィラメントとして使用可能であり、また、別の熱硬化性ポリママトリックス材料も上記フィラメント間の領域には使用することができる。例えば、上記フィラメント22としては、ガラス、織物(例えば、ナイロン、布)、又は、その他の材料から製造されていても良い。また、この層は、上記の他、KEVLAR(登録商標)等、ファイバーガラス強化ポリマ樹脂や、その他の材料から製造されていても良い。また、上記フィラメントは、その断面が円形でなくとも良い。上記複数の層10〜20は、また、“プライ”とも呼ばれ、その全体が8つの構造で構成されており、“レイアップ”(又は、ラミネート若しくは複合構造体)と呼ばれる。
図1の上記レイアップについては、上記対となった複数の層10,12は、直接互いに隣り合っており、かつ、上記ファイバ21を取り囲んでいるとともに、XYZ軸系23のX−軸に沿って上記複数のフィラメント22が配列されている。このX軸は、光線が進行してゆく上記ファイバの長手方向軸(Z−軸)に対して90゜とされている。次の対となった層14,15は、上記ファイバ21を取り囲んでいるとともに、上記Z−軸から+45゜の角度で配列された上記フィラメント22を有している。上記複数の層16,17は、上記Z−軸から−45゜の角度で配列されたフィラメント22を有しているとともに、最外部の複数の層18,20は、上記Z−軸に沿って配列されたフィラメント22を有している。
従って、図1の上記レイアップは、パターン[0,−45,+45,90]ファイバ[90,+45,−45,0]を有している。上記パターンを、“擬似等方対称的レイアップ”と呼ぶ。擬似等方対照的レイアップは、良く知られているように、上記層平面内における高い剛性を有する構造であり(すなわち、面内における剛性)、これは、上記構造に加えられる面内での荷重配置には依存しないように固定されている。また、図1の上記レイアップは、“対称的”と呼ばれるが、これは、上記フィラメント22の配列が、上記ファイバ21と、上記複数の層10,12の間の平面と、に対して対称になっているためである。上記レイアップが対称な場合には、その結果得られる構造は最もカールが少なくなる。その他のフィラメント配列及び上記以外の層数も所望により用いることができるが、これについては後述する。
図1のレイアップは、どのようなフィラメント配列を有している場合にも種々の方法によって製造することができる。例えば、上記層10〜20は、樹脂24を間に予め含浸させたフィラメント22を有するように、予め形成しておくこともできる。上記層は、その後、所望のレイアップパターンとして形成することも可能であるが、この場合には、上記ファイバ21は、所望する方向に上記所望の複数の層に対して、位置決めされる。この様な構成体は、その後、密閉型の金型又は、オートクレーブ内で固化される。又は、乾式織布レイアップでは、密閉式樹脂−射出成形プロセスを用いて同様にして構成体とすることができる。上記いずれのプロセスにおいても、上記樹脂は、化学反応が生じる温度にまで昇温されて、上記マトリックスが重合(すなわち、硬化)される。この様にして硬化され、その後冷却が行われる。
図2には、上記フィラメント22それぞれが、上記フィラメント22よりもずっと細い撚られたグラファイトファイバ束(又はストランド)50とされているのが示されている。上記フィラメント22は、典型的には、約5から10ミクロンの直径d1を有しており、これらは、所定層の全体積に占める強化グラファイトの容量%(例えば50〜70%)に依存して決定される距離d2だけ所定層内において互いに隔てられている。上記それぞれの層の層厚t1は、上記フィラメント22の上記直径d1とおよそ等しいか、あるいは、僅かに厚くされる。これ以外の層厚、直径、容量%であっても所望により使用することができる。また、上記フィラメントは、撚られた束である必要はないが、固体であることが必要である。
図2は、単一の層についての理想的な場合を示しており、上記積層した複合構造体では、上記複数の層が、明瞭に規定できるようになっていない。例えば、別の層からのフィラメントは、上記硬化プロセス中に移動してきて、上記フィラメントの間に再配置されることもあるし、上記フィラメント間の上記樹脂24が、別の層の樹脂と結合することもあり、この様にして上記複数の層間における明確な境界が無くなるためである。
再度図1を参照すると、上記層10、12の上記強化フィラメント22は、上記ファイバ21に対してそれぞれ90゜で配列されており、上記ファイバ21と上記回折格子28には、大きな不等方横方向在留応力があることがわかる。これにより、上記ファイバ21と上記回折格子28には、対応する歪みが誘起される。用語“横方向”応力とは、本明細書中では、上記ファイバ21への上記レイアップの上記X−軸方向と、Y−軸方向への応力を示している(すなわち上記ファイバ21の長手方向Z−軸に対して垂直な方向である)。特に、横方向の残留応力成分は、上記Y−方向である上記層面に対して垂直な方向(すなわち、膜厚方向である)の他にも、上記層の面内において上記X−軸に沿って存在する。上記それぞれの横方向応力は等しくないことから、大きく異なった歪みが上記ファイバ21には加えられており、上記ファイバ21の上記部分と、上記構造体内に埋封されている上記回折格子28と、に複屈折を生じさせている。上記複屈折により、上記ブラッグ回折格子は、そえぞれの偏光が異なった反射波長を与える。
我々は、また、ファイバ21内においてこの様にして誘起された複屈折と回折格子28が、温度に依存して変化することを見いだした。この効果は、上記ファイバ領域の全構造が、上記ファイバ21の特定部分において、上記X−方向と上記Y−方向で異なった熱膨張係数を示すためである。この結果、上記複屈折は、温度とともに変化することになる。上記複屈折は、所定の構造に基づいて較正され、上記構造体の温度変化、温度で補償された歪みを決定するために使用され、又は、温度信号と、歪み信号と、の双方を得るために使用される。
ここで図3を参照すると、上記2つの層10,12の強化フィラメント22が、上記ファイバ21に平行でない場合には、上記樹脂24の“目”形状領域40が、上記ファイバ21の周囲に形成される。この領域は、固化及び重合プロセスの間に上記強化フィラメント22が上記ファイバ21の上に橋掛けし、上記ファイバ21の回りに空虚な“目”形状空間が残されることになるためである。この空間は、その後上記硬化サイクル中に充填されることになる。上記“目”形状領域40の上記形状と、寸法と、を決定する要因は次のようになっている。上記ファイバ21と上記隣接した層10,12の上記フィラメント22の間の角度、上記オプティカルファイバ21の直径、上記フィラメント22のコンプライアンス、固化中に加えた圧力である。
上記オプティカルファイバ21の異なった熱膨張係数により、上記樹脂24と、上記フィラメント22と、上記レイアップ全体とは、上記複合構造体が硬化温度から室温にまで冷却されると、上述した不等方横方向在留応力を上記オプティカルファイバ21の回りに発生させる。この様な不等方応力は、上記ファイバに大きな複屈折を生じさせる。上記複屈折は、熱残留応力によるものであるため、上記構造体の温度が変化すると、複屈折の大きさも変化する。
特に、図4を参照すると、構造体中に埋封する前にファイバセンサは、所定の波長、例えば1290.79nmの点52によって示す透過プロファイルを示しており、これは、単一の極小値を有しているにすぎない。図5を参照すると、図4の上記センサが、上記ファイバ21に垂直な隣接したフィラメント22を有する構造体中に埋封されている場合(図3参照)、で[90,−45,+45,0,0,+45,−45,90]2ファイバ[90,−45,+45,0,0,+45,−45,90]4(上記ファイバの長手方向軸から測定した角度である)のレイアップを有する場合には、上記反射プロファイルには、二つの局所的ピーク54,56を生じ、その波長分離はb1、例えば0.569nmであり、かつ、第一の反射波長54と第二の反射波長56は、それぞれ異なった偏光に対応している。上記波長分離は、上述したようなファイバの複屈折によって引き起こされているものである。
より具体的には、上記ファイバ21(図3)の周囲の樹脂リッチ領域40は、その隣接するフィラメント22の垂直配置と、上記複合構造体中の他の層とともに、上記ファイバセンサに対して、横方向残留応力の不等方成分を加える。上記不等方応力は、その一部は、上記Y−軸に沿った領域と、上記X−軸に沿った樹脂リッチ領域40とで、樹脂体積が不均等であることに起因している。また、所定の層についての樹脂の体積割合も、上記ファイバに生じる応力集中の要因となっていることも考えられる。上記要因すべてが、上記ファイバ21の複屈折を最大化させているものと推定できる。
上記横方向応力は、また、ネット熱膨張係数において、上記面内における上記フィラメントの長さ分にそった熱膨張係数と、それに垂直な方向の熱膨張係数とでは、大きく異なっている(すなわち、それぞれの層内における垂直面内のネット熱膨張係数)が、これは、それぞれ上記複数の層10〜20すべてのフィラメントが同一方向に対して配向されているわけでないことによる。特に、上記フィラメントの熱膨張係数は、上記樹脂の熱膨張係数とは異なっている。
ここで、図6を参照すると、上記ファイバ21が、隣接したそれぞれの層10,12のフィラメント22に平行になるように配列されている場合には、図3の上記“目”形状の樹脂リッチ領域40は、本質的に存在しない。これは、上記強化フィラメントは、向きが異なってはおらず、上記ファイバ21の回りに実質的に均一に接しているためである。
特に、図7を参照すると、構造体中に埋封される前は、ファイバセンサは、所定の波長、例えば1284.38nmの点58で示すように、単一の極小値をその透過プロファイル中に有している。図8に示すように、図7の上記ファイバセンサが、上記隣接するフィラメント22が上記ファイバ21(図6)に平行となるような構造で埋封されている場合であて、下記のようにレイアップされている場合には、[0,+45,−45,90,90,−45,+45,0]2ファイバ[0,+45,−45,90,90,−45,+45,0]4(それぞれの角度は、上記ファイバの長手方向軸から測定した角度である)、上記反射プロファイルは、2つの局所的ピーク59,60を反射率において有することとなり、この際の微小な波長分離b2は、例えば、0.125nmとなっている。
この様な微小な波長分離b2(図8)は、上記複合構造体中でのそれぞれ別の層の存在と、上記配列と、によって生じるファイバ中の上記不等方横方向応力により生じているものである。図5から図8の複屈折の大きな変化は、従って、上記ファイバに対する上記隣接する層10,12それぞれの上記フィラメントの配列にのみ依存している。このことは、上記ファイバ21の直接上下にある上記二つの層の互いの配列と、これに対応する上記“目”形状40(図3)の形成とが、上記ファイバの複屈折を生じさせる主要要因となっていることを示している。
図4と図7に示した上記透過プロファイルは、上記回折格子28を通過した光線34(図1)の強度分布と、波長分布と、を示しているものであり、また、図5と、図8と、に示した上記反射プロファイルは、上記回折格子28によって反射された上記光線32(図1)の強度分布と、波長分布と、を示している。
ここで、図9と、図10と、を参照すると、上記ファイバ21の上記直径dfは、上記“目”形状領域40(図3)の直径deと、上記ファイバに対する上記隣接層10,12の種々の異なった配列と比較がなされている。特に、上記フィラメント22が、上記ファイバ21から,それぞれ62,64,66で示すように90゜,45゜,22.5゜で配列されている場合の上記“目”形状は、それぞれ68,70,72の形状で示されている。図1と、図3と、に示す配列、すなわち各隣接フィラメントが90゜である配列については、上記“目”形状の直径deは、最大化され、又、上記複屈折もまた、最大化される。逆に、図6に示す配列については、上記“目”形状の直径deは、最小化され、かつ、上記複屈折もまた、最少化される。
ここで、図10と、表1と、を参照には、図10にプロットした規格化したアスペクト差(de−df)/(de−df)maxとフィラメント配列との関係及び規格化したファイバ複屈折とフィラメント配列との関係が、表1の経験的なデータから得られることを示す。表1と、図10と、に示されているように、上記規格化された複屈折と上記規格化されたアスペクト差とは、互いに関連性を有している。
上記の議論は、温度により上記回折格子28に生じ、かつ変化する横方向応力についてのものであるが、この議論は、直接上記回折格子28に生じ、かつ、変化する複屈折にも関連している。しかしながら、上記ファイバ21はまた、温度変化により、上記長手方向軸(Z−軸)に沿って膨張及び収縮する。このことにより、上記回折格子の間隔(空間的周期)が変化して、すなわち、平均的な屈折率が変化して、周知のように上記ピーク反射波長はシフトすることになる。従って、本発明の上記埋封型ファイバセンサでは、温度変化が、長手方向が変化することによる波長シフトを生じさせるとともに、温度変化による複屈折の変化が、上記2つの偏光の波長差(分離)の変化として現れることになる。
外部から加えられる応力については、上記Z−軸に沿った外部からの引っ張り応力に関していえば、我々は、上記横方向応力(従って複屈折は生じない)についての影響は無視し得るものであることを見いだしている。しかしながら、本発明は、上記影響が無視し得ない場合であっても、加えられた応力に対する応答性が温度に対する応答性と同一ではないものの、等しく適用できる。これについてはより詳細に後述する。
ここで図11を参照すると、図1のレイアップに変えて、複数の他のレイアップが所望により使用できるとが示されており、これらによっても上記回折格子に不等方横方向応力を与えることができる。上記隣接した層10,12の上記フィラメント22の配列は、所望する複屈折の大きさによって決定される。特に図11のパターンは、次のようになっている。[0,+45,90,−45]ファイバ[−45,90,+45,0]である。また、上記ファイバの上下の上記複数の層のブラケットされた対となった数は、ファイバの複屈折に対して影響を与える最小の数として示されている。例えば、図11のレイアップは、上記ファイバの上下において、8対の織布を有していても良く、この場合には[7以上が同一][0,+45,90,−45]ファイバ[−45,90,+45,0][7以上が同一]のように表される。
図1から図11を参照すると、良く知られているように、ブラッグ回折格子を有するファイバが構造体内に埋封され、かつ、センサとして使用される場合には、上述のメルツ等による米国特許に論じられているように、波長幅の広い、偏光されていない光線30が、上記ファイバ21の一端から入射される。上記回折格子28は、所定の波長幅の狭い戻り光32を反射させて、残りの波長については、上記回折格子28を通過させ、光線34とする。上記戻り光32は、スペクトラムアナライザ(図示せず)により分析され、ファイバが埋封されている上記構造体の歪みと、温度変化と、により引き起こされる波長シフトが決定される。
図12を参照すると、本発明のレイアップにより生じた上記ファイバ21の複屈折により、上記回折格子28(図1)の上記反射スペクトルが、上記複屈折の偏光軸に沿った2つの特性を有していることが見い出された。特に、上記複屈折により、上記ファイバ回折格子28(図1)は、複屈折誘起ファイバ回折格子28の第一の偏光軸(又は偏光状態)に対応する波長λaに中心を有する第一の反射曲線80を有する。また、第二の反射曲線82は、波長λbに中心を有しており、これは、複屈折誘起ファイバ回折格子28の第一のすなわち、直交する偏光軸(又は偏光状態)に対応している。
反射率曲線80,82における上記反射ピーク波長λa,λbの間の波長分離Δλ1は、それぞれ上記ファイバ28に誘起された複屈折に対応している。従って、上記波長幅の広い未偏光の光線30(図1)を上記回折格子28に入射させた場合には、戻り光32の最大強度は、実質的には、λaと、λbと、とになり、この際、λaは、上記第一の偏光軸にそって偏光しており、λbは、上記第二の偏光軸に沿って偏光している。これは、上記回折格子28の上記複屈折によるものである。上記偏光軸の配列は、図1の軸23に沿っている必要はなく、上記ファイバ回折格子28内に加えられる応力ベクトルの方向に関連付けられている。
上記構造体は、外部から応力及び/又は温度の変化にさらされた場合には、中心波長すなわち、上記2つのピークλaと、λbとの中間の平均波長λcは、新たな平均波長λfにシフトすることとなる。このλfは、上記回折格子28の周期的間隔が変化しているため(及び上記コアの平均屈折率が変化しているため)、λcからはΔλ3だけ離れている。また、上記2つの波長の間隔は、Δλ1からΔλ2へと変化する。すなわち、第一の偏光軸に対応する上記反射率曲線60は、新たな中心波長λdを有するとともに、それに直交する偏光に対応する上記反射率曲線82は、新たな中心波長λeを有するためである。我々は、前述した複数のレイアップについて、平均波長シフトΔλ3(λf−λc)に対する温度及び歪み応答性が、上記波長ピークの間隔Δλ2−Δλ1の上記温度及び歪み応答性と異なっていることを見いだした。
より具体的には、上記平均波長シフトΔλ3は、下記式

ここで、図13と、図14と、を参照することで、我々は、図11に示した上記レイアップに対して経験的に、AT=9.82x10-3nm/℃であり、Bε=1.17x10-3nm/μεであることを見いだした。
また、温度と歪みとの関数としてのピーク波長間隔(すなわち、分離)の上記変化は、
で表される。
図15を参照して我々は、経験的に上記図11のレイアップについては、温度が20℃から75℃の間では、CT=−1.44x10-3nm/℃であり、温度が75℃より高い場合にはCT=−8.53x10-3nm/℃であることを見いだした。また、図11の上記レイアップについては、図16(詳細は後述する)のグラフの傾きから、Dεは、およそ0である。異なった材料、レイアップ、及び/又は固化プロセスを使用した場合には、上式1と、式2の係数については、別の値が得られる。従って、上記したレイアップ、材料、及びプロセスの組み合わせについて、上記それぞれの係数を決定するために較正手続きを実施する必要がある。
このため、通常本発明では、上記2つの未知数(温度及び歪み)について、上記式(式1と式2)を解くために、2つの独立した測定を用いる。しかし、図11で示した上記レイアップのようにDεが無視できるものであれば、上記Δλspacingは、直接温度変化に比例し、このため、上記温度は、単純に上述した係数CTの値を用いて波長間隔の変化測定することによって得ることができる。しかしながら、Dεが、近似的に0でない場合には、上記係数CTは、上記ピーク波長間隔を、歪みに対してプロットしたデータを温度Tの関数とした式に対してカーブフィッティングを行うことによって得られ、その後、上記式(式1と式2と)は、周知の方法によって、同時に温度及び歪みとについて解かれる。図13〜図16までの上記データを最適化させるいかなる周知の技術であっても、所望に応じて用いることができる。
さらにまた、上記ファイバ21は、上記構造体8の包囲層10〜20と緊密に接着していることを考慮する必要がある。
本発明は、図1から図11の擬似等方的レイアップを用いて記載を行ってきたが、上記フィラメントについてのいかなるレイアップ構成であっても、上記X−軸方向のファイバ応力が、上記Y−方向のファイバ応力と異なっていて、上記回折格子28に対し、必要な複屈折を生じさせることができるものであれば用いることができる(上記2つの横方向応力が等しくないことである)。上述したように、対称的なレイアップは、上記デバイス全体についての上記応力を打ち消すために用いることができ、この様にすれば上記構造体のカールを避けるようにすることもできる。
図17を参照すると、上記領域40は、図3に示すような“目”形状である必要ではないが、上記ファイバ内に不等方横方向応力を生じさせるようないかなる形状であっても良い。本発明のためには、媒体M1が、上記ファイバに対して矢印90で示すように垂直な(Y−軸)力を加え、かつ、媒質M2は、それ自体、又は、M1により加えられる力とともに矢印92で示されるような実質的に垂直方向(X−軸)の力を加えており、かつ、92に沿った上記力が、90に沿った上記力と等しくはなく、さらに、これらの力の差が温度とともに変化するようになっていれば良い。さらに、上記ファイバ上の上記媒質94は、上記ファイバの下側の材質と同一でなくとも良い。さらに、上記媒質M1は、フィラメントと樹脂によって製造されている必要はなく、上記媒質M2は、樹脂で製造されている必要もない。例えば、上記媒質M2は、実際には気体又は液体などの非固体の媒質であっても良い。
また、複屈折が必要な部位は、検出が行われる上記回折格子28(図1)のみであり、ファイバに沿った別の部位ではない。この理由は、上記回折格子から戻る2つの異なった波長の光があっても、上記ファイバ21以外の部位での複屈折が無いことが、これらの複数の波長の検出を妨げるものではないためである。しかしながら、信号強度を最大とするためには、上記ファイバ(上記構造体の内部及び外部の双方について)は、偏光面が保存できるファイバであるとともに、上記構造体内に適切に配列されていることが好ましい。図1と図11とに示した実施例では、構造体内の上記ファイバ21の全領域は、上記回折格子領域と同一の不等方横方向応力の下に置かれ、従って、ファイバの複屈折は、上記構造体内では上記ファイバ長さにわたって保存されている。
さらに、本発明は、メルツ等の上述した米国特許に開示されているように、連なった複数の回折格子を有するものとして実施することもできる。さらに、これとは別に、メルツ等の上述した米国特許に開示されているように、上記測定は反射ではなく、透過を用いて実施することもできる。この場合には、上記戻りとして測定する光は、回折格子によって反射された光ではなく、上記回折格子を透過した光となる。従って、反射波長ピークを測定するかわりに、透過波長における谷間を観測することになる。透過した光は、単に反射される光に対して相補的となっているだけであることに留意すべきである。従って、上記それぞれのモードのいづれか、あるいはその双方について同一の回折格子を用いることができる。
また、ブラッグ回折格子を用いるかわりに、不等方横方向残留応力の下で複屈折特性を発揮するような、いかなる反射要素であっても使用できる。さらにまた、ファイバ21のかわりに、上記回折格子28へと光を導き、かつ、上記回折格子28から光を導くため、いかなる光学的導波路であっても使用できる。また、上記回折格子(又は、反射要素)28は、例えば、薄いフィルムデバイスといった、いかなる形状の光学的導波路に埋封されていても良い。
さらに、上記隣接する複数のフィラメントの配列は、上記ファイバ21の長手方向軸に関連して論じてきたが、本発明において重要なのは、上記回折格子内での複屈折であり、このような配列を、上記回折格子(又はその他の反射要素)の長手方向軸について行うことが必要とされることである。
また、本発明においては、上記構造体中に埋封される前には全く複屈折を有しないファイバを用いるかわりに、複屈折率ファイバを使用することもできる。この場合には、本発明により誘起される上記複屈折は、上記ファイバに本来ある複屈折を強めるか、又は、弱めるかすることになる。
さらにまた、上記構造体中には、所望により1つ以上のファイバを用いることもできる。また、本発明は、上記ファイバ、あるいは複数のファイバを内部に埋封した構造体を設計する技術としても利用できて、小型の“パッチ”センサも製造でき、この場合には、このレイアップは、温度及び/又は歪みを別々に検出する別の構造体に取り付けられるようになっている。
さらには、それぞれの層のフィラメントが互いに平行になっているのではなく、2次元の織布、すなわち、上記層内において少なくとも2方向にフィラメントが延びているものがそれぞれの層について使用されていても良く、これによって、上記ファイバの断面積における不等方的な垂直及び横方向のネット熱膨張係数を与えるようにされていても良い。これとは別に、3次元織布を使用することもでき、この場合には、フィラメントは、単一の層内では2次元的に延びているとともに、層間にも延びているものであってこれにより、上記回折格子28には、互いに交差した横方向応力が生じるようになっている。
本発明は、フィラメントの間に樹脂を有する層を用いて記載を行ってきたが、本発明は、不等方的な互いに垂直な横方向のネット熱膨張係数を、上記ファイバの断面において生じさせるような、いかなる組成物を有する層についても等しく用いることができる。
また、本発明は、ファブリペロー型干渉器として構成されている2つ、若しくはそれ以上の反射要素の対にも利用でき、また、米国特許出願番号第08/069,231号、題名“能動型マルチポイントファイバレーザセンサ”にも開示されているように、複屈折配置を使用したレーザキャビティとしても利用することができるが、この場合も、上記複屈折は、本発明によって誘起されているものである。

- 入射光を規制し、かつ、戻り光を規制するための光学的導波路と、
前記入射光の光路内において前記導波路内に配設され、前記入射光の一部を反射するようになっているとともに、第一の横方向軸と、前記第一の横方向軸に垂直な第二の横方向軸と、を有する少なくとも一つの反射要素と、を有しており、かつ、前記第一の横方向軸と前記第二の横方向軸とは双方とも、光線が進行する方向に沿っ た長手方向軸に対して垂直であり、
前記反射要素に対して複数の力を加えて、前記反射要素内に不等方横方向歪みを加えるようになっている横方向応力手段と、を有しており、
前記不等方横方向歪みは、前記反射要素内に複屈折を生じさせるとともに、温度により前記不均等横方向歪みが変化すると、前記複屈折が変化するようになっており、
前記複屈折は、前記反射要素の第一偏光軸に沿っている前記反射要素波長の第一ピークを与え、かつ、前記反射要素の第二の偏光軸に沿った前記反射要素波長の第二ピークを与え、
前記第一ピークと前記第二ピークとの間には波長差が存在することによって波長間隔が形成されていて、かつ、前記第一ピークと前記第二ピークとの間の中間が平均波長とされ、

前記入射光の光路内において前記導波路内に配設され、前記入射光の一部を反射するようになっているとともに、第一の横方向軸と、上記第一の横方向軸に垂直な第二の横方向軸と、を有する少なくとも一つの反射要素と、を有しており、かつ、前記第一の横方向軸と前記第二の横方向軸とは双方とも、光線が進行する方向に沿っ た長手方向軸に対して垂直であり、
前記反射要素を取り囲み、かつ積層構造体を形成している複数の層を有し、
前記複数の層は、互いに積層された場合には前記反射要素に対して力を加えて、不等方横方向応力を前記反射要素に対して生じさせるような方法と材料とを有し、
前記不等方横方向歪みは、前記反射要素内に複屈折を生じさせるとともに、温度により前記不均等横方向歪みが変すると、前記複屈折が変化するようになっており、
前記複屈折は、前記反射要素の第一偏光軸に沿っている前記反射要素波長の第一ピークを与え、かつ、前記反射要素の第二の偏光軸に沿った前記反射要素波長の第二ピークを与えており、
前記第一ピークと前記第二ピークとの間には波長差が存在することによって波長間隔が形成されており、かつ、前記第一ピークと前記第二ピークとの間の中間が平均波長とされ、
さらに、上記波長間隔は、温度と、歪みと、に応答性を有していて、この応答性は、上記平均波長に対する応答性とは異なっているため、温度測定と、歪み測定と、を上記単一の反射要素によっても独立して行うことが可能な埋封型光学センサ。 - 前記複数の層はそれぞれ面内において互いに垂直、かつ、不等方のネット熱膨張係数を有していることを特徴とする請求項18に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記複数の層は、前記反射要素に対して所定の配列を有している強化フィラメントと、前記積層構造体を互いに保持している結合材料とを有していることを特徴とする請求項18に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記フィラメントは、第一の熱膨張係数を有しており、かつ、前記フィラメントの間の前記結合材料は、前記第一の熱膨張係数とは異なっている第二の熱膨張係数を有していることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記反射要素に隣接した前記フィラメントは、前記反射要素の長手方向軸とは平行でない方向に配列されていることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記反射要素に隣接した前記フィラメントは、前記反射要素の前記長手方向軸に垂直な方向に配列されていることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記フィラメントは、前記反射要素を包囲する形状を形成していて、この形状は、前記第一の横方向軸よりも前記第二の横方向軸に沿って容積が大きくなっていることを特徴とする請求項23に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記形状は、“目”形状であることを特徴とする請求項24に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記反射要素は、前記反射要素の上側が4つの前記層に取り囲まれており、前記反射要素の下側はまた、4つの前記層によって取り囲まれていることを特徴とする請求項18に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記層のうち少なくとも二つの層のフィラメントは、前記層のうちの別の層のフィラメントの方向とは異なっていることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記結合材料が、ポリママトリックスであることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記フィラメントは、グラファイト製であることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記フィラメントは、グラファイトストランドを有していることを特徴とする請求項20に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記導波路は、オプティカルファイバであることを特徴とする請求項18に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
- 前記反射型要素は、ブラッグ回折格子を有していることを特徴とする請求項18に記載の埋封型光学センサ。
