Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は熱インクジェットペンの構造に係り、さらに
詳しくは、インクの貯蔵・分配性能を改善した単一また
は多区画のペン本体に関する。
〔従来技術及びその問題点〕
熱インクジェットプリント技術では、インクを熱イン
クジェットプリントヘッドに供給するためのブラッダ
（浮袋）型インク溜を備えたものが知られている。プリ
ントヘッドは通常、その中に複数のヒータ抵抗を有する
薄膜抵抗（TFR）基板を有し、障壁層・オリフィス部材
が通常・薄膜抵抗基板の上にマウントされている。この
部材は通常、ヒータ抵抗の上方に配置されたインク溜を
有し、さらに、インクをプリント媒体に排出する対応の
ドロップ発生器ノズルを形成する。
プリントヘッド全体にインクを供給するブラッダ溜
は、たとえば、熱インクジェットプリントヘッドが取り
付けられているハウジング内に配置されたゴムシンブル
の形をとる。この形式のインク溜・プリンドヘッド構造
は、たとえば、Hewlett Packard Journal Volume 36 Nu
mber 5.May 1985に開示されている。
これらのブラッダ型インク溜は一般的には、一定型式
の熱インクジェット（TIJ）プリンタにとって満足でき
るものではあるが、それにもかかわらず、他の形式のプ
リンタに応用する場合には、比較的大きな空間を占有す
るため十分な量のインクを保持できない場合があるとい
う問題点があった。
〔発明が解決しようとする問題点及び解決手段〕
したがって、本発明の一般的な目的は、熱インクジェ
ットプリンタに用いられる新規かつ改良されたペン本体
を提供することである。この新規なペン本体構造はブラ
ッダ型インク溜法とは大きく異なっており、新規なプリ
ントヘッド・インク溜構造を有している。この構造にお
いては、従来技術のインク貯蔵インク送り機構に関連し
た上記問題は除去ないしはかなり解消されることになっ
た。
この目的を達成するためには、我々は一定のインク貯
蔵フォーム（発泡体）（多孔度が制御されたポリウレタ
ンフォームが望ましい）を含む新規なペン本体構造を発
見・開発した。このフォームは、その材料内の複数の小
さな膜壁に孔を設けて網状とし、それによってその内部
のインクの移動度を増大させたものである。このフォー
ムはまた圧縮してその内部の孔の大きさを減少させてフ
ォーム厚を減少させるとともにその密度を増大させる。
このようにして、フォームの所望の毛管現象が制御でき
る。この方法によって、フォームの毛管力が増大され、
それによって、このインク貯蔵媒体が薄膜抵抗型の熱イ
ンクジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送るのに特に適
したものになる。また、このインク送り装置はフォーム
を収容するのに最小のスペース（体積）を用いて与えら
れ、フォーム内での対応する最大のインク貯蔵能力を特
徴としている。また、このポリウレタンフォームは比較
的安価に入手することができ、ペン本体ハウジングの隔
壁によって互いに分離され、すなわち隔壁を介して互い
に隣接した仕切り室に挿入するのに特に適している。こ
のハウジングは、本発明の一実施例に対応する使い捨て
のペン本体に藍色、マゼンダ、黄色などの種々の色のイ
ンクを貯蔵するのに用いることができる。
このペン本体構造の種々の利点および新規な特徴は添
付図面の次の説明によって容易に明らかになるだろう。
〔実施例〕
第１図には、３つに仕切られたペン本体10が示されて
いる。このペン本体10の内部には、点線で分割された区
域として図示された３個のインク貯蔵仕切り室12,14お
よび16が設けられている。ペン本体10はさらにアウトプ
ット・プリントヘッドを支持する支持表面18を備え、該
支持表面18には、直立した側壁20が隣接して、四角い容
器形状（以下、矩形支持容器）19が形成されている。こ
の構造はさらに、３個のインク貯蔵仕切り室12,14およ
び16とそれぞれ連通する３個のインク出力ポート22,24
および26を有している。
矩形支持容器19は、複数個のインク射出オリフィース
群30,32,34を有する薄膜抵抗型プリントヘッド28を受け
入れるような形状になっている。これらのインク射出オ
リフィス30,32および34は、円形状で、矩形支持容器19
の表面18に延びるインク流路22,24および26と連通す
る。
第１図のアッセンブリでは、３つのインクフィルタ3
6,38および40がそれぞれ仕切り室12,14および16内にマ
ウントされている。これらのフィルタは通常、所望の多
孔性をもったステンレスワイヤメッシュからできてお
り、ペン本体10の３つの仕切り室12,14および16内に配
置されたポリウレタンフォーム（発泡体）の３つの部分
42,44,46からインクを送るときに空気泡および個体粒子
を良好にろ過する。
フォーム・ボディ部42,44,46の裏面48には、50で一般
的に示されたプラグ50が取り付けられており、エンドカ
バー51を有するプラグは、背圧が生じるのを防ぎ、イン
クがフォームからフィルタ36,38および40を通ってプリ
ントヘッドへ移動し易くなるようにする。エアベント
（通気孔）52は有孔性のプラスチック膜54で被覆されて
おり、プラスチック膜54は通気孔52からインクが漏れる
のを防ぐ。これら３つの通気孔52およびそれらの間の仕
切壁66,68の構造の詳細は、後述する第２図の拡大断面
図で示されている。前述したように、フォーム・ボディ
部42,44,46のフォーム材料は、多孔度が制御されたエー
テル系ポリウレタンフォームである。ポリウレタンフォ
ーム中の多数の膜壁は穴があき、網状となっている。こ
れによって、フォームの毛管力が増大し、それによって
フォームは、薄膜抵抗熱インクジェットペンプリントヘ
ッドに至るインク供給路に沿ってインクを送るのに特に
適したものになる。プラグ50はさらに、フォーム圧縮タ
ブ56を有する。このタブ56は図示のようにフォーム部分
42,44および46に延入し、フォーム内の毛管力を増大
し、またプリントヘッドへのインク分配を最適化するた
めにフォームに対して所望の量の圧縮力を与える。
実際に用いられているフォームは、Scott Paper Comp
any of Philadelphia Pennsylvaniaから発売されている
エーテル系フォーム材料で、１インチ（2.54cm）あたり
60〜75孔の多孔度を有している。
第２図の断面図は、第１図の線２−２に沿うもので、
両面において同じ要素は同じ参照番号で示されている。
ペン本体10は内壁62および64を有し、それらは、第１図
に示されたフォームの直方形部42,44および46を受容す
る３つの仕切り室を部分的に画定する。これらの内壁6
2,64は、前述したエンド（端）プラグ50のエンドカバー
（端部材）51の対応する丁字状の内側延設部66,68を受
止める。このプラグ50はさらに、図示のように空所
（溝）部76,78および80と連絡する通気孔70,72および74
を有する。プラグ50のエンドカバー51のこれらの溝部
（空所）76,78および80には、フォームの３つの仕切り
室内に適当な通気を与える複数の多孔性膜82,84,59を取
り付ける。この膜は、ポリテトラフルオロエチレン（PT
FE）からなり、十分な網密度を有し、インクが３つの通
気孔70,72,74を通して逆流するのを防ぐ。
複数のインク室88,90,92は、ペン本体10の第２図中の
下の部分で、３つのインクパイプ94,96,98に、それぞれ
図示のように形成されている。各インクパイプ94,96,98
はそれぞれ、前述したワイヤメッシュフィルタ40,38,36
をそれぞれ備えている。これらのフィルタは、インク室
88、90、92を通って最終的には薄膜抵抗プリントヘッド
28に至るインクから空気泡や個体粒子をろ過する。この
インク流路はまたペン本体10の図中下向きの表面100と
薄膜抵抗プリントヘッド基板28の半導体サブストレート
部材102の対向面との横方向インク路も含んでいる。
インクパイプ94,96,98は、壁62,64,66と組み合って、
フォームの下に図示される空間を形成している。この形
状により、３個のフィルタの上に図示される部分のフォ
ームの圧縮が増大する。これにより、その部分における
毛管現象が増大し、フォームを図中縦に上から下へと通
って、３つのインクパイプ94,96,98に入るインク路を空
気泡が妨害してしまう可能性を減少させる。
サブストレート部材102は、接着障壁106によってノズ
ル板104に接着される。この障壁106は、E.I.Dupon Comp
any of Wilmington,Delawareから発売されているRISTON
又はVACRELという商標名のポリマー材料を選択すること
ができる。インクはインクパイプ88,90,92を通って図中
縦に上から下に流れ、サブストレート部材102内の３つ
の垂直路108,110,112は、ノズル板104内にあり、第１図
に示すような円形パターンに配置された複数グループの
オリフィス30,32,34にインクを送る。
ノズル板104は、ニッケルで電気鋳造され、金めっき
され、さらに、例えば本願出願人に係る、特願昭62−11
2221「インクジェットプリントヘッドの製造方法」にお
いて開示されているヒートステーキング法を用いてポリ
マー障壁材料106に貼られる。
ノズル板104は、上述したHewlett Packard Journal,V
ol.38,No.5 May 1985に記載された方法で製造できる。
薄膜抵抗構造28は、適当な接着剤114によってペン本
体10の図中の最下面100に固定されている。接着剤114
は、第２図に示すように、内側にへこんだ壁面116,118
とともに、サブストレート102の外周に塗布される。
本発明は、熱インクジェットへの応用に限定されるも
のではなく、上記のようなフォームによるインク貯蔵の
性能が要求され且つ適用可能な他の型のインクジェット
においても用いることができる。
また、本発明によるペン本体は、白黒やカラーのプリ
ンタおよび種々のラスタ、ベクトルモードで動作するプ
ロッタの製造においても有用である。
なお本明細書中で「ペン」とは、「プリントヘッドと
インクを貯蔵する手段とを一体としたもの」を包含する
概念である。したがって、一般的には「プリントヘッド
カートリッジ」或いは、単に「プリントヘッド」と呼称
することもある。
〔効果〕
本発明は、上記のように構成され、作用するものであ
るから、インク貯蔵のため発泡体を用いているので、容
積当たりのインク貯蔵量を増大させることができるとい
う効果が得られる。また、隔壁を介して互いに隣接させ
て発泡体を配置させることができるので、複数の色イン
クを極めて小さい容積を収容することができるという効
果が得られる。したがって本発明は、使い捨て型のプリ
ントヘッドカートリッジ、特にカラープリンタ用カート
リッジに使用して効果極めて大である。

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】以下の（ａ）〜（ｄ）を備えたインクジェ
    ットペン。 （ａ）インクを通過せしめるための開口部を有する支持
    表面を備えた支持部材、を有するハウジング。 （ｂ）前記ハウジングの外部において、前記支持表面上
    に配置され、前記開口部に連通する複数のインク射出オ
    リフィスを備えたインクジェットプリントヘッド。 （ｃ）前記ハウジングの内部に配置され、前記開口部を
    介して前記インクジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送
    るため、該インクを受け入れ、制御された毛管現象下で
    該インクの貯蔵を行うインク貯蔵発泡体。 （ｄ）前記支持部材から前記インク貯蔵発泡体に延入し
    て前記ハウジングの内壁との間で該インク貯蔵発泡体を
    圧縮して自己の近傍で増大する前記制御された毛管現象
    を生じ、前記開口部にインクを導くためのインクパイ
    プ。
  2. 【請求項２】前記インクジェットプリントヘッドが熱イ
    ンクジェットプリントヘッドであることを特徴とする特
    許請求の範囲第１項記載のインクジェットペン。
  3. 【請求項３】前記インク貯蔵発泡体と前記インクパイプ
    との間にメッシュフィルタを備えたことを特徴とする特
    許請求の範囲第１項記載のインクジェットペン。
  4. 【請求項４】前記メッシュフィルタがワイヤメッシュフ
    ィルタであることを特徴とする特許請求の範囲第３項記
    載のインクジェットペン。
  5. 【請求項５】前記ハウジングがその内壁にタブを有し、
    該タブと前記インクパイプとにより前記インク貯蔵発泡
    体をさらに圧縮して該タブと前記インクパイプとの間で
    該インク貯蔵発泡体の毛管現象をさらに増大するように
    したことを特徴とする特許請求の範囲第１項記載のイン
    クジェットペン。
