低電圧で高輝度発光が可能である有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子は次世代の表示素子としてその開発が検討されている。しかしながら、フルカラーディスプレイに必須な青色発光素子に関しては発光特性が十分なものがなく、発光輝度及び発光効率の向上が求められている。
発光輝度及び発光効率を向上させるため有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子の発光層に使用する有機金属化合物が検討されている。このうち、有機ゲルマニウム化合物を使用する例としては、特許文献1に、ゲルマニウム−ゲルマニウム金属結合を有する有機金属化合物の使用について触れられているが、式(1)で表わされる有機ゲルマニウム化合物に関しては全く知られていなかった。
また、有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子への有機ゲルマニウム化合物の使用としては、特許文献2にテトラフェニルゲルマニウムの正孔注入層への使用が記載されているが、正孔注入層以外への使用は全く知られていなかった。

Ar雰囲気下、乾燥した20mlシュレンク管にテトラヒドロフラン8.5mlをドライアイス−エタノールで−78℃に冷却し、n−ブチルリチウムのヘキサン溶液(f=1.59)1.6ml(2.5mmol)を滴下した。滴下後、トリフェニルゲルマニウムクロライド848mg(2.5mmol)を加えた。−78℃に維持したまま10分間攪拌した後、氷浴中0℃で1時間攪拌した。反応終了後、反応溶液に水40mlと塩化メチレン80mlを加えて分液し、水層を塩化メチレン20mlで2回抽出し得られた有機層を合わせて無水硫酸マグネシウム1.2gで乾燥した。ろ過後、ろ液から塩化メチレンを減圧留去し、得られた残滓をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(展開溶媒:n−ヘキサン)によって精製することで目的化合物を白色固体として得た。(収量0.5g、収率55%)
