Abstract
The present invention is directed to a method of patterning a carbon nanotube transparent conductive coating / film by functionalizing sidewall groups, changing the applied carbon nanotube (CNT) network, and affecting the conductivity of the nanotubes. And Regions resulting from chemical modification have higher or lower conductivity than regions that have not been altered. This provides a patterned film, which is shaped to form electrodes, pixels, wires, antennas or other electrical components. Furthermore, chemically modified regions of CNTs can be returned to their original conductive state (ie, reversible and repeatable) or can be immobilized to obtain an invariant pattern.

(Background technology)
Many electronic devices require electrical conductors that are optically transparent to visible light. Transparent electrical conductors function by sending power to operate a user interface, such as a touch screen, or sending signals to the pixels of an LCD display. Transparent conductors are an essential element in many optoelectronic devices such as flat panel displays, touch screens, electroluminescent lamps, solar panels, “smart” windows, and OLED lighting devices. In all these applications, the user must operate through the conductive layer. In addition, transparent patterned conductors are valuable in creating biometric identification, ie smart cards that store or transfer information through a conductive layer. The use of a transparent conductive layer in such a card is advantageous for security purposes because it is difficult to find information. Future electronic devices will be limited in function and form by the materials and manufacturing processes currently used to make the conductive transparent layer. For electrically conductive and optically transparent coatings and films, it is more transparent, has approximately the same conductivity, is processed using large area patterning and removal techniques, is flexible, and as a whole It is required to be manufactured at a low price.
Today, most transparent electrodes are made from transparent conductive oxides such as indium tin oxide (ITO), which has been used as a preferred choice for 40 years. ITO is applied to an optically transparent substrate by vacuum deposition and then patterned using an expensive photolithography technique to remove excess coating to form wires and electrodes.
In either process, it is difficult to expand the scale to cope with a large area coating, and a large amount of cost is required. ITO also has fairly significant limitations. (1) ITO films are fragile (a concern for mechanical reliability when applied to flexible materials such as plastic displays, plastic solar cells, wearable electrical circuits). And (2) ITO circuits are typically formed by vacuum sputtering with photolithography etching (applying high volume / large area may be too expensive to fabricate).
Efforts have been made to provide transparent electrodes that replace ITO films. A typical example is a suspension of ITO particles in a polymer binder. However, this ITO filling system cannot match the conductivity of the continuous ITO film. Furthermore, transparent conductive polymer materials are currently being developed. These polymers generally require additives (dopants) that impart conductive properties, which are applied onto the substrate using screen printing or inkjet coating techniques. Although these are still in the developmental stage and have not yet reached the conductivity level of the ITO film, the presence of additives (dopants) is expected to have an adverse effect on the control of the conductive properties, and the device It may not be suitable for miniaturization.
Thus, there is a method by which a coating having a desired pattern of conductivity, such as an improved product obtained from these methods, can be formed efficiently, quickly and cost-effectively. is needed.

Most transparent electrodes are made from transparent conductive metal oxides such as indium tin oxide (ITO). Basically, ITO is applied to an optically clear substrate and patterned using expensive photolithographic techniques to remove excess coating and form wires and electrodes. It is difficult and expensive to perform this process over large areas throughout. Efforts have been made to provide transparent electrodes that replace ITO films. A typical example is a suspension of ITO particles in a polymer binder. However, this ITO filling system cannot match the conductivity of the continuous ITO film.
As an alternative to the metal oxide film coating, a carbon nanotube (CNT) coating can be mentioned. CNTs can form a conductive network on the coated surface. These coatings are formed using conventional wet coating processes that can be performed on large areas at low cost, such as spraying, dipping, roll coating, etc. It is not limited. Such coatings are deposited by applying CNTs only where needed using selective processes such as ink jet printing, silk screen printing, gravure coating and other conventional coating processes known to those skilled in the art. Can be patterned inside. By controlling the application of this network of nanotubes by printing or spraying, the patterned area can be formed to function as an electrode of the device. The use of printing techniques to form these electrodes eliminates the need to use more expensive processes such as vacuum evaporation and photolithography that are commonly used today during the formation of ITO coatings. As an alternative to such selective deposition, a continuous CNT coating is applied to the surface, and then one or more regions of the CNT are ablated or removed (subtraction) to form a pattern. For example, laser etching can selectively remove CNTs where it is not desired to leave a pattern.
カーボンナノチューブは、公知であり、標準的な重要性(R.Saito、G.Dresselhaus、M.S.Dresselhaus、「Physical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes」、Imperial College Press、London U.K.1998年、またはA.Zettl、「Non−Carbon Nanotubes」、Advanced Materials、8、443頁、1996年)を有する。 Carbon nanotubes are known and of standard importance (R. Saito, G. Dresselhaus, MS Dresselhaus, “Physical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes”, Imperial College Press, London U.A. 98, year 19). Zettl, “Non-Carbon Nanotubes”, Advanced Materials, 8, 443, 1996). Carbon nanotubes include straight and / or bent multi-walled nanotubes (NWNT), straight and / or bent double-walled nanotubes (DWNT), straight and / or bent single-walled nanotubes (SWNT), and combinations and mixtures thereof. Is mentioned. CNTs also have various compositions in the form of these nanotubes, and common by-products included in nanotube preparations as described in US Pat. No. 6,333,016 and WO 01/92381 And various combinations and mixtures thereof. Carbon nanotubes may also be chemically modified to incorporate chemicals or compounds and produce effective and useful molecular orientations (see, eg, US Pat. No. 6,265,466) Or it may be physically modified to adjust the physical structure of the nanotubes.
Smalley(Guo,T.,Nikoleev,P.,Thess,A.,Colbert,D.T.,and Smally,R.E.,Chem,Phys. また、Smalley(Thess,A.,Lee,R.,Nikolaev,P.,Dai,H.,Petit,P.,Robert,J.,Xu,C.,Lee,Y.H.,Kim,S.G.,Rinzler,A.G.,Colbert,D.T.,Scuseria,G.E.,Tonarek,D.,Fischer,J.E.,and Smalley,R.E.,Scinece,273:483〜487頁(1996年))らは、この文献において、単層カーボンナノチューブの製造プロセスについて記載しており、ここで、少量の遷移金属を含むグラファイトロッド(炭素棒)が、約1,200℃でオーブン中でレーザー蒸発されることが記載されている。 Useful nanotube types include materials containing SWNTs based on single-walled carbon. SWNTs can be formed by a number of techniques, such as laser ablation of carbon targets, hydrocarbon decomposition, or arc discharge between two graphite electrodes. For example, US Patent No. 5,424,054 to Bethune et al. Describes a process for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes by contacting carbon vapor with a cobalt catalyst. The carbon vapor is generated by electric arc heating of solid carbon, which can be amorphous carbon, graphite, activated carbon, decolorized carbon, or a combination thereof. Also, other techniques such as laser heating, electron beam heating, and RF induction heating have been studied as carbon heating techniques. Smalley (Guo, T., Nikoliev, P., Thess, A., Colbert, DT, and Smallly, RE, Chem, Phys. Lett. 243: 1-12 (1995)) et al. Describes in this document a method for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes, where it is stated that graphite rods (carbon rods) and transition metals are vaporized simultaneously by a high temperature laser. Also, Smalley (Thess, A., Lee, R., Nikolaev, P., Dai, H., Petit, P., Robert, J., Xu, C., Lee, YH, Kim, S. G., Rinzler, AG, Colbert, DT, Scuseria, GE, Tonarek, D., Fischer, JE, and Smalley, R.E., Scinece, 273: 483. 487 (1996)) describe in this document a process for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes, where a graphite rod containing a small amount of transition metal (carbon rod) is at about 1200 ° C. It is described that it is laser evaporated in an oven. Single-walled nanotubes have been reported to be produced with a yield of 70% or more. US Pat. No. 6,221,330 describes a method for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes using a gaseous carbon source and an unsupported catalyst.
It is known that a film made of carbon nanotubes has a low surface resistance of about 10 2 Ω / □. “Method for Distinguishing Hollow Carbon Microfibres, Electrically Conductive Transparent Carbon Microfibres to Form Carbon Conductive Aggregation Films and Forming Forms” US Pat. No. 5,853,877, entitled “Coating” describes the formation of such conductive carbon nanotube films. Also, in US Pat. No. 6,221,330 entitled “Processing for Producing Single Wall Nanotubes Using Unsupported Metal Catalyst”, a process for producing single-walled nanotubes using an unsupported metal catalyst is formed. There is a general description of the production of such carbon nanotubes used to do so. However, there is no report on the above technique regarding a method of patterning a film made of carbon nanotubes.
Coatings containing carbon nanotubes, such as carbon nanotube-containing films, have been previously described (US patent applications 10 / 105,623, 10 / 201,568, 10 / 105,618, 10 / 442,176, 10 / 729,369, 10 / 978,212, US Pat. Nos. 6,493,208 and 6,762,237). Such films, 10 2 Ω / □ (10 0 Ω / □ ~10 6 Ω / □ or higher range) as low surface resistance, and total light transmittance of about 95% (light transmittance; 60% ˜99% or more range). The carbon nanotube content in the film is about 50% (in the range of 0.001% to 50%).
Such materials can be formed by a two-step process, which results in a carbon nanotube film having a low electrical resistance as well as a high light transmission. First, a dilute aqueous solution of carbon nanotubes is sprayed onto the substrate to evaporate the water, leaving only the solidified carbon nanotubes on the surface. Next, a resin is applied onto the solidified carbon nanotubes, and the resin penetrates into the network of solidified carbon nanotubes.
Carbon nanotubes were discovered by electron microscope observation in 1991 by Dr. Iijima of Meijo University in Japan. Since then, deep research has been done on carbon nanotubes. Generally, a carbon nanotube is similar to a hollow cylinder made of a graphite sheet, and its inner diameter is 1 to 20 nm. Graphite is known to have a unique structure. That is, the covalent bonds between the carbon atoms constituting the graphite are arranged in a peculiar form. Therefore, the graphite has a rigid, horizontal hexagonal sheet shape. The upper and lower regions of the sheet are filled with dispersed free electrons, which move in parallel to the sheet plane.
The carbon nanotube has a recently confirmed carbon shape, and the tube is composed of a single graphite sheet having a spiral structure depending on the arrangement of the graphite sheet. The electrical properties of carbon nanotubes are functionally related to their helical structure and their diameter (Phys. Rev. (1992) B46: 1804 and Phys. Rev. Lett. (1992) 68: 1579). Thus, changes in either the helical structure or the chirality of the carbon nanotubes result in a change in free electron motion. As a result, free electrons can move freely as in metallic materials, or free electrons need to overcome electron band gap barriers as in semiconductive materials depending on the tube structure. .
Furthermore, any modifications made to the carbon atoms that form these tube sidewalls will consequently modify the electrical properties of the tube. Semiconductive carbon nanotubes are chemically doped with electron donating or electron withdrawing chemicals to form tubes with metal-like conductivity. Furthermore, metallic nanotubes can be transformed into less conductive conductors by damage to the sidewalls, chemical reactions to the sidewalls, emission of electrons or other high energy particles.
When SWNTs are made functional, their electrical properties change dramatically. Untreated SWNTs are essentially metallic and their point-to-point resistance (substantially contact resistance), measured at 5 mm diagonal of the “buckle paper” surface, Bozko et al. 1998, Appl. Phys. A, 67: 75-77) is 10-15 ohms (Ω). When treated with fluorine, the tube becomes insulative and the resistance between the two points exceeds 20 MΩ. A method of fluorinating carbon nanotubes is described in US Pat. No. 6,645,455 to Margrave et al. After methylation, the tube has a point-to-point resistance of about 20 kΩ. By pyrolyzing the methylated product, the resistance is reduced to about 100Ω. It is believed that the incomplete conductivity return on pyrolysis is due to the increased contact resistance due to the disorder caused to become a rope lattice following a series of reaction steps. The usefulness of this method of selectively patterning carbon nanotube coatings is severely limited by the reaction conditions, even by the same reaction conditions that selectively control the pattern configuration and cause fluorination of the nanotubes. It also limits the ability to process coatings on standard substrates such as plastic and glass that are modified.
Many methods for forming a patterned carbon nanotube coating on a substrate are conventionally available. A typical method is to create a pattern by removing excess material from a continuous coating of nanotubes on a substrate, or to remove uncoated areas between conductive paths to act as an insulator. While remaining, the pattern is additionally created by directly coating the nanotubes on the substrate.
For example, US Patent Application No. 20040265755 relates to a method of making a carbon nanotube patterned film or a carbon nanotube composite using carbon nanotubes surface modified with polymerizable moieties. However, this method has low electrical resistance because the nanotubes are all chemically functionalized on the sidewalls, and during deposition, the nanotubes are dispersed in the polymer, disrupting the formation of the nanotube conductive network. An electrically conductive coating having the following is not obtained. In this disclosure, the deposited nanotube / polymer layer is later selectively removed by photolithography.
US Patent Application 20020025374 relates to a selective growth method on a substrate to form patterned carbon nanotubes. This is a kind of additional method of growing nanotubes directly on the surface at a high temperature of 500 ° C. or higher. This limits the use of this technique for hot substrates and does not easily peel off, allowing the production of most or continuous films. Similarly, US Pat. No. 6,858,197, Delzeit discloses a patterning method, where nanotubes are selectively grown on a substrate to form a pattern. Has been. This method has the unique feature of first patterning the polymer on the surface and then growing the nanotubes in areas where no polymer is deposited, thereby providing nanotubes aligned in the path. To produce a patterned nanotube surface with This method is also inferior in that it requires a high temperature to form nanotubes, and the size of the coated substrate that can be processed is limited by the size of the vacuum chamber. Inferior.
US Pat. No. 6,835,591 relates to a nanotube film produced by a subtractive removal method that forms a patterned carbon nanotube conductive film. However, chemically modifying the nanotubes to switch the electronic state of the nanotubes is not disclosed as a means of forming a pattern from a continuous coating of nanotubes. Furthermore, for subtractive methods, this disclosure is not reversible, and as in the present invention, the change between the nanotube-containing region and the region from which the nanotube has been removed is easily detected as a visible change. It is described that it is done.
The present invention utilizes chemical modification along the sidewalls of the carbon nanotubes to selectively change the portion of the CNT coating from conductive to low conductive, thereby providing a continuous coating of CNTs on the substrate. Forming an electrical circuit or patterning overcomes the problems and disadvantages associated with existing subtractive and additive methods for patterning nanotube coatings. Furthermore, the process of selectively switching the nanotube coating from conductive to low conductive can be reversed or reversible by this method. This makes it possible to remove and / or rearrange patterns without removing or adding CNTs from the surface. All other known methods of forming CNT patterns or circuits require removing or adding ether from the CNTs in order to change the pattern. The method of the present invention makes it possible to utilize a single layer of CNTs to deal with storing information repeatedly or redesigning the surface circuitry. This shows the special utility of storing data without leaving a noticeable physical change, such as in appearance, which makes the circuit or pattern invisible on the surface or It can be hidden.
One embodiment of the present invention is directed to a method of forming metallic CNTs that provide electrical conductivity in a coating. Such nanotubes may be targets in chemical modifications that increase or decrease the conductivity of the network. The nanotube coating may include either semiconductive nanotubes or metallic nanotubes, or both. Sidewall chemical modification or functionalization is the result of a covalent bond formed during the photochemical reaction between the carbon nanotube sidewall group and the reagent.
The conductivity can be changed for the desired pattern of CNTs or, alternatively, for the inverse of the desired pattern of CNTs, in other words, only the unpatterned region. . Thereby, a complicated pattern can be generated. The coatings may also be bonded together to form a layer, or may be combined with commercially available circuits or conductive patterns to produce multiple layers of patterned structures.
The functionalized nanotubes should have an electrical resistivity of at least greater than 10 times, preferably greater than 100 times, more preferably greater than 1,000 times, more preferably greater than 10,000 times. Also, the functionalized nanotubes should have an electrical resistivity that is at least less than 10 times, preferably less than 100 times, more preferably less than 1,000 times, more preferably less than 10,000 times.
As one form of patterning, chemical reagents such as osmium tetroxide (OsO 4 ) functionalize the carbon nanotube sidewall groups in the presence of oxygen and ultraviolet light at about 254 nm (effective for functionalization) The reagent is not limited to osmium tetroxide. Ultraviolet light introduces defects in the covalent bonds on the CNT sidewalls and destroys the periodicity of the nanotube's intrinsic conjugated SP2 electronic structure. Coatings generally contain other compounds that may interfere with the reaction, such as polymeric compounds, surfactants, dispersants, additives (dopants) and similar composites known to those skilled in the art. Without exposure to reactants and photoexcitation. Furthermore, the sidewall group can be modified by ozonolysis. A conventional method of forming a transparent conductive coating with carbon nanotubes is to mix CNTs with a polymer resin and then form the coating. The resulting CNTs are embedded and are not utilized for sidewall functionalization or chemical reactions. However, in the present invention, CNTs are deposited using only temporarily present liquid to disperse the nanotubes on the surface. The liquid is then removed by evaporation, sublimation and / or other methods that cause a phase change from liquid to gas (ie, “temporary” in this sense). Once dried, the deposited layer generally consists of CNTs and open spaces occupied primarily by air or other gases. At this stage, all or part of the substrate is coated with an open CNT network that is susceptible to penetration by chemical reagents suitable to change the individual and / or collective overall electronic structure of the nanotubes.
Other embodiments of the present invention are directed to metallic CNT coatings that provide electrical conductivity in the coatings formed by the methods of the present invention.
Disclosed herein are methods for patterning CNT coatings that overcome many of the limitations imposed by the methods described above. In this method, a uniformly CNT-coated substrate without a binder coating is selectively exposed to reactants that alter the electrical properties of the nanotubes so that it is less conductive than the unexposed areas of the coating. In addition, a conductive network is produced. The resulting coating can be exposed to form a pattern useful as a device manufacture.
In addition, the patterned coating can be re-exposed to undo the process, resulting in a coating with uniform conductivity similar to that at start.
Alternatively, the exposed and patterned coating can be fixed so that the pattern remains unchanged and cannot be restored. No other patterning method presents such a level of process and design flexibility.
The pattern formed by this method is still covered with CNTs, and only the electronic properties of the coating are changed, so that it is very difficult to detect the conductive pattern. It is unparalleled. As a result, a transparent conductive pattern having uniform smoothness (for example, flatness) and optical uniformity can be obtained.
In order to form a pattern using chemical modification of the nanotube sidewalls, the nanotubes can be exposed to a reagent. The two-step coating method can form a base coating of nanotubes. A preferred method of forming the initial CNT coating is to deposit the nanotubes from a solution / ink that includes a temporary solvent and a dispersant, and more preferably includes only such a solvent and dispersant. Thus, the ink is deposited using conventional coating techniques such as spraying and dried on the surface to form a network of nanotubes free of other compounds. Preparation of the CNT coating is performed prior to patterning.
A second aspect of the present invention is to selectively utilize published chemical reactions that covalently modify the sidewalls of CNTs to reduce conductivity, thereby providing a patterned electrical conductor on the surface. Is to form. Examples of the present invention are disclosed in the following embodiments and examples, but are not limited thereto.
(Embodiment 1)
The first method of forming the patterned coating is to expose the pure CNT coating to both OsO 4 and O 2 gases in an inert gas carrier / environment. First, arc manufactured SWNT soot is purified by process steps including acid reflux, water washing, centrifugation and microfiltration. Thereafter, the purified SWNTs are mixed with a 3: 1 solution of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) (other types of alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, etc.) and water and coated with carbon nanotubes Form a liquid. Soot containing about 50-60% carbon nanotubes is purified by refluxing in 3M nitric acid solution at 145 ± 15 ° C. for 18 hours, then washed, centrifuged and filtered. The purified mixture produces an ink solution containing 99% or more single-walled carbon nanotubes at a concentration of approximately 0.059 g / l.
The CNT coating is formed by a simple spray coating or other conventional method of solution depositing this ink on the surface and then dried to obtain a pure layer of CNTs.
Once UV light is applied to the surface of the CNT, the chemical reaction proceeds. Since UV light is exposed to the pattern, the reaction occurs selectively only in the region where UV light photoinitiates chemical attack on the CNT sidewall by cycloaddition of osmium tetroxide (OsO 4 ). Interestingly, the reaction occurs on metallic CNTs and not on semiconductive CNT sidewalls.
Once the metallic CNTs that form the coating are modified, their electrical resistivity is much lower than those that are not exposed to fully reactive conditions. At this point in the process, the reaction is reversed and the modified CNTs become conductive by re-exposing the coating to ultraviolet light and oxygen (O 2 ; in the gas state) (in the absence of OsO 4 ). There is an opportunity to revert to sex CNTs. As an alternative, UV and vacuum can be used to reverse the reaction, but in this case the conversion takes a considerable amount of time. This creates an opportunity to repeatedly switch the transparent conductive layer electrically.
If reversibility is not desirable and instead a fixed or permanently patterned coating is required, the patterned coating is then converted to water vapor (eg, water-enriched outside air). In addition, a second chemical reaction is initiated in which osmium dioxide covalently bonded to the CNT sidewall is converted to an osmyl ester or quinine functional group. As a result, the sidewalls of the CNT are effectively modified to switch to a state in which their conductivity is lost.
There are many practicability of this patterning method, including the following, but is not limited thereto.
(1) The resolution of patterning is limited only by the details of the UV image projected on the coating and the size of the nanotube bundle structure.
(2) Reagents (OsO 4 , O 2 , H 2 O, and carrier gas Ar or N 2 ) are all gaseous and are therefore easily transported to and from the coating surface, This provides a pure CNT network that can then be filled or coated with a binder.
(3) The reagent can be applied together with a solvent in the form of a liquid.
(4) Modified CNTs can be returned to their initial conductive state without loss by re-exposure to water vapor or other reactants.
(5) The patterned coating can be locked in its pattern and fixed permanently.
(6) The patterned coating can penetrate with the polymer to bond the layers in place in the substrate. This binder resin can be selected to provide environmental protection to the conductive layer.
(7) Multiple layers and binders of CNTs can be stacked to build a multilayer circuit or device. Individual layers do not interfere.

(Embodiment 2)
Chemical modification of the CNT sidewalls is done by other types of reactions known in the literature. These reactions are not photoinitiated, but selectively apply reagents to form patterns and modify CNTs. The concept is the same as that of the above-described embodiment in that a chemical reagent is applied to the existing CNT coating to selectively change the electrical characteristics of the conductive layer. The CNT layer coated with the reagent reacts with SWNT. In general, a solvent wash step is required to remove excess reactants and by-products from the coating. Examples of effective reagents are provided below.

Example 4
Derivatization with allyl-diazonium The derivatization with allyldiazonium species can be caused photochemically. The photochemical reaction is performed using 4-chlorobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate. A suspension of SWNT-p in 1,2-dichlorobenzene is produced by sonication. To this suspension is added a portion of the diazonium salt dissolved in a minimum amount of acetonitrile. The resulting mixture is stirred with an excitation wavelength of about 254 nm (ultraviolet light source) in the presence of the photochemical reactor chamber. The light source for the photochemically triggered reaction is of any wavelength, generally ultraviolet or visible wavelength. The resulting material is similar in all respects to SWNT-2 prepared by electrochemical techniques. This experiment further confirms that the reaction of the diazonium salt results in a covalent bond with the nanotube. Of course, alkyl, alkenyl, and alkynyl adducts can be used in the processing steps in the present invention, and the various allyldiazonium salts used for modification can be used to modify the carbon nanotube sidewalls. In addition, parameters such as additional potential, duration of applied voltage, solvent, and supporting electrolyte can be varied.
