The present invention relates to a technique for recovering valuable materials from a lithium battery. In particular, the present invention relates to a technique for obtaining a useful recovered material from a lithium transition metal oxide used as a positive electrode active material of the battery.
Various methods for recovering lithium transition metal oxide from a lithium battery having a composite oxide containing lithium and a transition metal element (hereinafter referred to as “lithium transition metal oxide”) have been proposed. For example, in
In the technique described in
Therefore, the present invention provides a processing method for a lithium battery including a lithium transition metal oxide, and a processing method capable of obtaining a valuable material (for example, a lithium transition metal oxide) capable of constructing a lithium battery with higher performance. One purpose is to provide. Another object of the present invention is to provide a method for recovering valuable materials (for example, lithium transition metal oxides) to which such a processing method is applied. Yet another object is to provide a method for producing a positive electrode active material from a lithium battery comprising a lithium transition metal oxide.
One invention disclosed herein relates to a method for treating a lithium battery having a positive electrode active material substantially composed of a lithium transition metal oxide. The lithium battery includes a positive electrode unit having a positive electrode material on a current collector. The positive electrode material includes the positive electrode active material, and typically further includes a binder. The processing method includes a step of separating a positive electrode unit from the lithium battery. Moreover, the process of isolate | separating the said positive electrode material from the said electrical power collector which comprises the said positive electrode unit is included. The method also includes a step of heating the positive electrode material together with about 0.01 to 12N sulfuric acid. The method may further include a step of recovering the insoluble matter after the sulfuric acid heat treatment.
The insoluble matter after the sulfuric acid heat treatment contains a solid (typically powdered) lithium transition metal oxide. The solid lithium transition metal oxide is modified by the sulfuric acid heat treatment. For example, sulfate ions (SO 4 2− ) and / or sulfate groups (hereinafter referred to as “sulfuric acid ions”) are mainly formed on the surface of particles constituting powdery lithium transition metal oxide (hereinafter also referred to as “lithium transition metal oxide powder”). , Sulfate ions and / or sulfate groups are collectively referred to as “SO 4 component”). The lithium transition metal oxide powder into which the sulfuric acid component is intentionally introduced as described above is used to produce a positive electrode active material of a lithium battery (typically, a lithium ion secondary battery) or other battery or the positive electrode active material. Can be used as a raw material to construct a battery exhibiting better performance (for example, low temperature output). Therefore, according to the said processing method, the recovery material (lithium transition metal oxide) more useful as a positive electrode active material of a lithium battery or its raw material can be obtained.
The step of separating the positive electrode material from the current collector typically includes peeling the positive electrode material from the current collector. As a peeling method, either a mechanical (physical) method or a chemical method can be used. Mechanical and chemical methods may be used in combination or sequentially. As a mechanical separation method, for example, a method of applying ultrasonic vibration to the positive electrode unit can be employed. Examples of the chemical separation method include a method of bringing the positive electrode unit into contact with sulfuric acid (a method of immersing in sulfuric acid, a method of washing with sulfuric acid, etc.). It is appropriate that the concentration of sulfuric acid used at this time is a concentration that does not excessively dissolve the positive electrode current collector. In addition, when the positive electrode material contains a binder (for example, a water-soluble binder), it is appropriate to dissolve and / or swell the binder and to have a concentration that does not excessively dissolve the positive electrode current collector. In addition, the sulfuric acid used for peeling of a positive electrode material here can be combined with the sulfuric acid used for a subsequent sulfuric acid heating process.
For the sulfuric acid heat treatment, sulfuric acid having a concentration of about 0.01 to 12N is used. From the viewpoint that the application effect of the present invention can be exhibited better (for example, a recovered material that can build a battery exhibiting better performance (for example, low temperature output) can be obtained), the concentration is about 0.05 N or more (typically Specifically, it is preferable to use sulfuric acid having a concentration of approximately 0.05N to 12N), and more preferably, sulfuric acid having a concentration of approximately 0.1N or more (typically, approximately 0.1 to 12N). When the positive electrode material is peeled by bringing the positive electrode unit into contact with sulfuric acid as described above, and the sulfuric acid used for the peeling and the sulfuric acid used for the sulfuric acid heating step are combined, the positive electrode current collector ( From the viewpoint of better avoiding dissolution of aluminum (typically made of aluminum), it is preferable to use sulfuric acid having a concentration of about 5 N or less (typically about 0.01 to 5 N), and the concentration is about 1 N or less. It is preferable to use sulfuric acid (typically about 0.01 to 1N).
The heating temperature in the sulfuric acid heat treatment is not particularly limited as long as it is room temperature or higher. For example, the heating temperature can be about 50 to 180 ° C. Usually, the heating temperature is preferably about 80 to 180 ° C, more preferably about 120 to 170 ° C.
The method disclosed herein can be carried out in a mode further comprising a step of treating the insoluble matter after the sulfuric acid heat treatment with a lithium solution. As the lithium solution used for the treatment, a lithium solution in which an ionic lithium compound (lithium salt) is dissolved in an appropriate solvent (typically water) can be appropriately selected. For example, an aqueous solution of lithium hydroxide can be preferably selected.
By performing such a lithium solution treatment, a recovered material (lithium transition metal oxide) in which the lithium component that has been lost before the treatment (for example, during the sulfuric acid heat treatment) is appropriately supplemented can be obtained. it can. Therefore, the recovered material obtained through the lithium solution treatment is further processed as necessary to be reused as the positive electrode active material of the lithium battery or a raw material for producing the lithium battery to construct a lithium battery with higher performance. Can do.
In addition, the method disclosed herein further includes a step of mixing the insoluble matter after the sulfuric acid heat treatment with a predetermined lithium compound, and heating the mixture in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain a lithium transition metal oxide. Can be implemented. Here, the lithium compound mixed with the insoluble component includes lithium oxide; and a lithium compound that can be converted into an oxide by heating (for example, lithium hydroxide, nitrate, carbonate, bicarbonate, etc.). One or more selected from the above can be appropriately selected and used. The “insoluble matter after the heat treatment with sulfuric acid” used in this step may have been subjected to the lithium solution treatment or may not have been subjected to the treatment.
According to this aspect, it is possible to obtain a lithium transition metal oxide in which the lithium component that has been deleted up to this step (for example, during the heat treatment with sulfuric acid) is appropriately supplemented. Such a lithium transition metal oxide can be further processed as necessary to be reused as a positive electrode active material of a lithium battery or a raw material for producing the lithium battery, so that a lithium battery with higher performance can be constructed.
The method disclosed herein can be preferably applied to a lithium battery in which the positive electrode material includes a binder. Examples of the binder include cellulose polymers (cellulose derivatives) such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), methylcellulose (MC), cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP); polyethylene oxide ( PEO), polypropylene oxide (PPO), polyalkylene oxide such as polyethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer (PEO-PPO); polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether copolymer (PFA) ), Tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (FEP), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer ( Fluorine resins such as TFE); vinyl acetate copolymer; styrene butadiene rubber (SBR); vinylidene resins such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC); polyvinyl alcohol (PVA); polyacrylamide (PAAD) One or two or more selected from polyolefin resins such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP); thermosetting resins (for example, polyimide (PI)); polyurethane; and the like can be used.
A particularly preferable application target of the present invention is a lithium battery in which the binder is a cellulosic polymer. According to the sulfuric acid heat treatment, such a cellulose polymer can be modified to reduce the molecular weight. In one preferred embodiment, the majority of the cellulosic polymer is broken down into monomers (eg, glucose). Glucose and the like are more easily decomposed by heating than the cellulose polymer. Therefore, when the insoluble matter after the heat treatment with sulfuric acid is a mixture containing a lithium transition metal oxide and a binder, the organic component (modified binder) is further removed from the mixture by heating the insoluble matter. It can be removed easily and / or more appropriately. Therefore, a recovered material (lithium transition metal oxide) capable of constructing a lithium battery with better performance can be obtained.

<Example 1: Treatment method of lithium ion secondary battery>
First, the configuration of a lithium battery (herein, a used lithium ion secondary battery for a vehicle) processed in this embodiment will be described.
FIG. 2 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a lithium battery according to the present embodiment, and FIG. As shown in these drawings, the
As shown in FIG. 3, the
かかる正極活物質は、例えば、一般式LiNi1−xCoxO2(0<x<0.5、好ましくは0.1<x<0.3)で表すことができる。

The
The
Next, a procedure for processing the
First, a used
Next, the discharged
In subsequent step 232, the
例えば、凡そ0.01〜12N(好ましくは凡そ0.05〜12N、より好ましくは凡そ0.1〜5N、さらに好ましくは凡そ0.1〜1N)の濃度の硫酸を使用することができる。
The positive electrode material is peeled off from the positive electrode current collector 122 constituting the extracted positive electrode sheet 12 (step 235). Then, the positive electrode current collector 122 and the positive electrode material are respectively taken out from the positive electrode sheet 12 (steps 236 and 250). As a method of peeling the positive electrode material from the positive electrode current collector 122, any of a mechanical (physical) method and a chemical method can be used. A mechanical method and a chemical method may be used in combination. Examples of the mechanical separation method include a method of applying ultrasonic vibration to the
In this example, the
The insoluble matter (the positive electrode active material and CMC treated with sulfuric acid) after the sulfuric acid heat treatment was separated from dilute sulfuric acid by filtration or the like. The recovered material was mixed with a predetermined amount of lithium hydroxide (LiOH.H 2 O or the like) and heated in an oxygen atmosphere at 600 ° C. for 8 hours (step 254). In this way, a lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide that can be used as a positive electrode active material of a lithium battery (for example, a lithium ion secondary battery) was obtained (step 260).
The positive electrode current collector 122 taken out in step 236 can be recovered as an aluminum foil (step 240) by washing with an appropriate solvent (for example, water) and drying (step 238). The positive electrode current collector (aluminum foil) collected in this manner can be reused for various applications as an aluminum material.
XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis was performed on the lithium-nickel-containing composite oxide obtained by applying the treatment method of this example to a used lithium secondary battery (that is, regenerated). The obtained chart is shown in FIG. From this figure, it can be seen that the obtained lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide (regenerated product) is in a single phase. Further, it was obtained by conducting an XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis on a general (ie, not a regenerated product) lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide having substantially the same composition as the recycled lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide. The chart is shown in FIG. As can be seen from FIGS. 4A and 4B, there is no particular difference between the non-regenerated lithium-nickel-containing composite oxide and the regenerated product according to this example. This is because the regenerated lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide obtained in this example is used in various applications similar to general (non-regenerated) lithium / nickel-containing composite oxides (for example, for lithium secondary batteries). This suggests that it can be suitably used for applications as a positive electrode active material.
In addition, as shown in FIG. 6, the concentration (N) of sulfuric acid used for peeling of the positive electrode material (step 235) and sulfuric acid heat treatment (step 252), and the sulfuric acid component in the obtained lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide There was a positive correlation with the content. This graph was obtained in the same manner as in the above example except that the lithium / nickel-containing composite oxide obtained in the above example (sulfuric acid concentration: 0.1N) and sulfuric acid having a concentration of 5N in
By varying the concentration of sulfuric acid used in the above examples, a plurality of types of lithium / nickel-containing composite oxides (regenerated products) having different sulfuric acid component contents were obtained. Using these recycled powders as positive electrode active materials, batteries were prepared as follows. The charge / discharge capacities of these batteries and the output at −30 ° C. (low temperature output) were measured.
That is, 90 parts by mass of the recycled product powder, 5 parts by mass of acetylene black and 5 parts by mass of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were mixed, and NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone) was added to form a paste. The paste was applied to an aluminum foil (
As can be seen from this figure, by increasing the sulfuric acid component content contained in the lithium-nickel-containing composite oxide as the positive electrode active material (for example, the sulfuric acid component content is 0.3 mass% or more), There was a tendency that the low temperature output (output at −30 ° C.) of the lithium secondary battery constructed using the positive electrode active material was improved. This result supports that the low-temperature output of the lithium secondary battery can be improved by using a positive electrode active material into which a sulfuric acid component is intentionally introduced.
