Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an ink jet recording apparatus and an ink jet recording method.
In the ink jet recording, there has conventionally been a method of controlling the dot diameter formed on the recording medium to a size suitable for the recording resolution by changing the ink discharge amount according to the recording resolution. As an example, in the draft mode, a method of compensating for a decrease in recording density due to a decrease in the number of dots by thinning out data in the main scanning direction and increasing an ink discharge amount when the recording resolution is reduced is disclosed in JP-B-6. -45244.
In the above prior art, in the draft mode, data is thinned out and recorded, so that a difference occurs between the dot diameter and resolution assumed in the data processing stage and the dot diameter and resolution in the actual output. The optimum image quality for the final dot diameter cannot be obtained. In particular, when recording natural images, the data that has been binarized with subtle gradations, etc., is recorded, so the impression that the recording results in the normal mode and the recording results in the draft mode in which the data is thinned out is completely different There is.
Although high-speed recording with increased main scanning speed by data thinning is possible, since data generation equivalent to normal recording resolution is required for data thinning, it is expected to increase the processing speed in image processing. Can not.
Furthermore, the ink jet recording has a problem that the dot diameter changes depending on the type of the recording medium even if the ink droplet weight is constant due to the property of recording by attaching the ink droplets to the recording medium. The above prior art cannot cope with the difference in dot diameter depending on the type of recording medium.
The present invention solves the above-described problems, and provides an ink jet recording apparatus that can obtain a suitable dot diameter regardless of the type of recording medium and can suppress deterioration in recording quality even in high-speed recording.
The present invention relates to an ink jet recording apparatus that performs recording by ejecting ink droplets from a recording element while relatively moving a head and a recording medium, and a recording medium selecting means for selecting a recording medium to be recorded, and a recording quality. An ink jet recording apparatus characterized in that the recording mode is specified according to the recording medium and the recording quality. Furthermore, in an ink jet recording method for performing recording by ejecting ink droplets from a recording element while relatively moving the head and the recording medium, a recording medium selecting step for selecting a recording medium to be recorded, and selecting a recording quality A recording quality selection step, wherein the recording mode is specified according to the recording medium and the recording quality.

The piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN are displaced in proportion to the amount of charge applied, and discharge ink droplets having ink weights corresponding to the amount of displacement by discharging the charges. Shall. Transistors Q101 to Q (100 + N) selectively supply charges to piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN corresponding to binary image data described later.

When the charge pulse goes low, the transistor Q7 is turned on to charge the capacitor C1. When the transistor Q7 limits the charging current supplied to the capacitor C1 through the resistor R9 to a constant value, the voltage of the capacitor C1 rises linearly with a slope θcn. When the power amplifier 11 increases the output voltage according to the voltage of the capacitor C1, electric charges are supplied to the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN, and the piezoelectric elements are displaced. When the charge pulse goes high, the transistor Q7 is turned off and the output voltage reaches Vhn. Vhn is a voltage when the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN are displaced in order to eject an appropriate ink weight to a normal dot.
After Twn time when the pause pulse is at low level, the discharge pulse becomes low level. In response, transistor Q8 is turned on. The electric charge stored in the capacitor C1 is discharged through the resistor R11. The transistor Q6 limits the discharge current to a constant value, so that the voltage of the capacitor C1 drops linearly with a slope θdn. The power amplifying unit 11 lowers the output voltage according to the voltage of the capacitor C1 and extracts charges from the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN. By discharging the electric charges of the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN, ink droplets having an appropriate ink weight are ejected to the normal dots. Eventually, after Tdn time, the discharge pulse becomes high level, and the discharge ends.

In response, transistor Q4 is turned on. The electric charge stored in the capacitor C1 is discharged through the resistor R3. At this time, since the transistor Q16 is in the OFF state, no current flows through the resistor R27. The transistor Q2 limits the discharge current to a constant value, so that the voltage of the capacitor C1 drops linearly with a slope θdn.
Next, the case of discharging minute dots will be described.
When the dot switching signal is at a low level indicating that a minute dot is selected, the
After Twm time when the pause pulse is at low level, the discharge pulse becomes low level. In response, transistor Q4 is turned on. At this time, since the transistor Q16 is in the on state, the resistor R3 and the resistor R27 are connected in parallel. The electric charge stored in the capacitor C1 is discharged through the parallel circuit of the resistor R3 and the resistor 27. The transistor Q2 limits the discharge current to a constant value, so that the voltage of the capacitor C1 drops linearly with a slope θdm. The power amplifying unit 11 lowers the output voltage according to the voltage of the capacitor C1 and extracts charges from the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN. By discharging the electric charges of the piezoelectric elements PZT1 to PZTN, ink droplets having an appropriate ink weight are ejected to the minute dots. Eventually, the discharge pulse becomes high level after Tdm time, and the discharge ends.
As described above, in the second embodiment, as in the first embodiment, it is possible to selectively discharge normal dots and minute dots by switching the dot switching signal, the charge pulse width, and the discharge pulse width.
In the first embodiment and the second embodiment, the number of dots to be ejected is two types of normal dots and minute dots. However, the number of dots to be ejected is not particularly limited to two. Correspondingly, multi-stage dot weights can be discharged by increasing the number of current control units. Further, in the second embodiment, multistage dot weights are discharged by increasing the number of resistors and select transistors connected in parallel to the resistor R1 and the number of resistors and select transistors connected in parallel to the resistor R3 according to the number of dot weights. can do.
In either case of the first embodiment or the second embodiment, the normal dot ejection voltage Vhn and the minute dot ejection voltage Vhm are switched by changing the slope of the output voltage waveform according to the charging current value and the charging pulse width. Vhn and Vhm can be switched by changing only one of them. For example, when Vhn> Vhm, the time for the output voltage to reach Vhm with the slope of the output waveform being θcn may be set as the charge pulse width at the time of discharging the minute dots. On the contrary, the charging current value may be decreased so that the slope of the output voltage waveform at which the output voltage becomes Vhm at the time when the charging pulse is completed while the charging pulse width is kept at Tcn.
Next, the relationship between the dot diameter on the recording medium and the recording resolution will be described.
Table 1 shows the recording modes output by the recording mode selection means 109 according to the outputs of the recording quality selection means 108 and the recording medium selection means 107.
The recording quality selection means 108 is set with two recording quality levels of high quality and medium quality corresponding to the two levels of the dot switching signal (H, L). When high quality is selected, minute dots (dot switching signal = L) are used, and when medium quality is selected, normal dots (dot switching signal = H) are used.
The recording medium selection means 107 is set with two types of media, dedicated paper and plain paper.
There are four types of
d1≦2d<d2,d3≦(2√2)d<d4
The dot diameter when the recording mode = 1 is d1, the dot diameter when the recording mode = 2 is d2, the dot diameter when the recording mode = 3 is d3, the dot diameter when the recording mode = 4 is d4, and d1 It is assumed that the relationship of ~ d4 is as follows.
d1 ≦ 2d <d2, d3 ≦ (2√2) d <d4
FIG. 4 shows the relationship between the dot diameter d1 when the recording mode = 1 and the resolution in each scanning direction optimum for the dot diameter. FIG. 6 shows the relationship between the dot diameter d4 when the recording mode = 4 and the resolution in each scanning direction optimum for the dot diameter.
When the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 3, the dot diameters d2 and d3 are larger than the resolution (d × d) of the
Therefore, when the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 3 as shown in FIG. 5, the resolution in the main scanning direction is set to 2d so that the effective area of the dots is increased and no blank portion is generated even in dense arrangement. The sub-scanning direction resolution is d. However, the dot positions on the even-numbered lines and the odd-numbered lines in the main scanning direction are relatively shifted by d, and the dots do not continue at the interval d in either the main scanning direction or the sub-scanning direction.
Table 2 shows the relationship among the dot switching signal, dot diameter, binary image data resolution, and gradation image data resolution in each recording mode.
Here, the type of recording medium and the recording quality are two types, but by setting the recording mode according to the dot diameter that changes according to the number of recording media or according to the ink weight switched in multiple stages. It is possible to deal with various recording media.
A binarization process in each recording mode will be described.
The gradation image data output means 106 outputs gradation image data having a resolution corresponding to the recording mode. For example, in the case of the recording mode = 1, it is possible to arrange a square lattice dot arrangement having a resolution in the main scanning direction d and the sub scanning direction d from the dot diameter d1 on the recording medium. The gradation image data is also rasterized with a resolution corresponding to this. The arrangement of the rasterized gradation image data is shown in FIG. The data row (

However, since the gradation image data itself on the odd raster does not have position information that shifts in the main scanning direction by d, the realistic arrangement of the gradation image data at the time of binarization is shown in FIG.

In the case of the recording mode = 3, the same processing as that of the recording mode = 2 is possible.
FIG. 9 is a block diagram showing an embodiment of the image processing of the present invention. The gradation image data data (i, i, i) output from the gradation data output means 106 based on the recording mode output from the recording mode selection means 109 is shown. The binarization result result (i, j) obtained by performing binarization processing suitable for the recording quality and the recording medium type for j) is output to the binary image data output means 110. Here, i and j are integers, which indicate data relating to the pixel located at the i-th in the main scanning direction and the j-th in the sub-scanning direction, counting from the starting pixel.
In this embodiment, a specific description will be given by taking the case as shown below as an example.
The gradation image data is data of 256 gradations ranging from 0 (white) to 255 (black), and the larger the gradation value, the higher the density pixel.
-The gradation image data is binarized to a gradation value of 0 or 255 by an error diffusion method.
-Regarding the scanning order in binarization, left to right in the main scanning direction and top to bottom in the sub scanning direction.
Specifically, the binarization operation is sequentially performed in the main scanning direction with the upper left pixel of the image as the starting pixel, and when the binarization for one line is completed after reaching the right end pixel, the scanning order is performed in the sub scanning direction. The line is moved down by one pixel, and binarization processing is similarly performed from the left end pixel to the right end pixel. The above scanning is repeated until the lowermost line is reached, and binarization for one screen is performed.
Further, the pixel that is i-th in the main scanning direction and j-th in the sub-scanning direction from the starting pixel is represented as P [i, j]. However, the starting pixel starts from P [i, j]. Assuming that P [i, j] is a pixel of interest to be binarized, in a normal pixel excluding a part of a single image, as shown in FIG. The left pixel on the same line as the target pixel is a binarized pixel, and the pixel on the line below the target pixel and the right pixel on the same line as the target pixel are non-binarized pixels.
The procedure of the binarization process according to the block diagram of FIG. 9 will be described based on the flowchart shown in FIG.
Assume that the recording
On the other hand, the
data_c(i,j)=data(i,j)+total_err(i,j)
The
data_c (i, j) = data (i, j) + total_err (i, j)
Here, the diffusion error integrated value total_err (i, j) stored in the diffusion error storage means 105 is a pixel (P [i−1) that has already been binarized in the vicinity of the target pixel P [i, j]. , j], P [i, j−1], etc.) during the binarization operation, the sum of errors diffused with respect to P [i, j].
data_c(i,j)≧threshならば、result(i,j)=255
data_c(i,j)<threshならば、result(i,j)=0
The
If data_c (i, j) ≧ thresh, result (i, j) = 255
If data_c (i, j) <thresh, result (i, j) = 0
It becomes. In this embodiment, a constant of thresh = 128 is assumed.
The binarization result result (i, j) is given to the binary image
P[i,j+1]、P[i+1,j]等に分配して拡散する。
The error diffusion means 103 converts the binarization error err (i, j) into the neighboring unbinarized pixels P [i, j + 1], P [i + 1, j] according to the weight value of the
Since the
This completes the binarization and error diffusion processing of the pixel of interest P [i, j]. Next, the j value is increased by 1, and the binarization process for the pixel on the right is repeated. When the binarization of one line of the image is completed by this repetition, the value of j is set to zero, and the value of i is increased by 1, thereby moving the target pixel to the left end of the next line. At this time, based on the recording mode (= 3), the matrix is switched to the
In this way, binarization for one image screen is completed while switching the matrix used for each line.
Although the case where the recording mode = 3 has been described as an example here, the operation of the
Further, when the recording mode = 1 or the recording mode = 4, since the dot arrangement is a square lattice, it is not necessary to switch the matrix for each line, and only the
Thus, optimal binary image data can be generated by image processing corresponding to the recording quality selected by the recording quality selection means 108 and the recording medium type selected by the recording medium selection means 107. That is, since the dot diameter assumed in the image processing stage and the dot diameter actually formed on the recording medium match, it is possible to suppress the image quality change due to the recording mode to the minimum. Further, focusing on the number of pixels to be binarized, when the recording mode = 1 is set as a reference, the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 3 are ½, and the recording mode = 4. Therefore, the time required for image processing can be shortened.

The recording mode selected by the recording
A case of recording using the head 6 shown in FIG. 15 will be described.
The main scanning means 200 moves the head 6 in the main scanning direction. Further, the recording timing is output at a position corresponding to the main scanning direction resolution indicated in the recording mode. For example, since the resolution in the main scanning direction is d when the recording mode = 1, the main scanning unit 200 outputs only one recording timing each time the head 6 is moved by the distance d. When the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 3, the resolution in the sub-scanning direction is d, and the recording start positions of the odd lines are shifted by d in the right direction with respect to the even lines. However, since the
In the recording mode = 2 and the
The sub-scanning means 201 moves the recording medium by a distance corresponding to the sub-scanning direction resolution indicated in the recording mode in the sub-scanning direction every time one main scanning is completed. For example, when the recording mode = 1, the recording mode = 2, and the recording mode = 3, since the sub-scanning direction resolution is d, the sub-scanning unit 201 causes the main scanning unit 200 to move the head 6 once. After the main scanning is completed, the recording medium is moved by the distance d (2k−1) times, and then the recording medium is moved by the distance (N−1) × (2k + 1) × d. Similarly, when the recording mode = 4, the resolution in the main scanning direction is 2d, so that the recording medium is moved by the

FIG. 14 is a block diagram showing an example of the internal configuration of the head signal generator 202.
The conversion unit 204 selects either normal dots or minute dots according to the recording mode, and outputs a dot switching signal. When the recording mode = 1 and the recording mode = 3, the dot switching signal is set to the low level to indicate that a minute dot is selected.
Further, when the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 4, the dot switching signal is set to the high level to indicate that the normal dot is selected.
Two timer data can be preset for the timers 205 to 207, one timer data is selected from the two timer data according to the recording mode, and a low level is output for the selected timer data time.
The timer 205 is preset with two timer data, a charge pulse time Tcn when discharging normal dots and a charge pulse time Tcm when discharging minute dots. When the recording mode = 1 and the recording mode = 3, the Tcm timer data is selected. When the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 4, the Tcn timer data is selected. The timer 205 is triggered by the rising edge of the recording timing, and the charge pulse is set to the low level for the time corresponding to the timer data corresponding to the recording mode.
The timer 206 is preset with two timer data, a pause pulse time Twn when discharging normal dots and a pause pulse time Twm when discharging minute dots. When the recording mode = 1 and the recording mode = 3, Twm timer data is selected. When the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 4, Twn timer data is selected. The timer 206 is triggered by the rising edge of the charging pulse, and the pause pulse is set to the low level for the time corresponding to the timer data corresponding to the recording mode.
The timer 207 is preset with two timer data: a discharge pulse time Tdn when discharging normal dots and a discharge pulse time Tdm when discharging fine dots. When the recording mode = 1 and the recording mode = 3, the Tdm timer data is selected, and when the recording mode = 2 and the recording mode = 4, the Tdn timer data is selected. The timer 205 is triggered by the rising edge of the pause pulse, and the charge pulse is set to the low level for the time corresponding to the timer data corresponding to the recording mode.
In this manner, the head 6 is driven by outputting a dot switching signal, a charge pulse, and a discharge pulse suitable for the recording mode.
With the configuration as described above, it becomes possible to make the dot diameter on the recording medium suitable by selecting the type and quality of the recording medium, and high-speed recording is performed by image processing at a recording resolution corresponding to the dot diameter. The image processing time can be shortened while suppressing the deterioration of the recording quality in the mode.
According to this embodiment, a suitable dot diameter can be obtained regardless of the type of recording medium. Even when recording is performed on the same recording medium at different recording resolutions, there is no deterioration in recording quality due to mismatch between the dot diameter and the recording resolution. By making the recording resolution and the image processing resolution the same, good recording quality independent of the recording mode can be obtained. By making the recording resolution and the image processing resolution the same, in the high-speed recording mode, an increase in the recording speed and an increase in the image processing speed can be expected.
