上記した公報のエアバッグ装置においては、エアバッグがその膨張部にて乗員の膝から臑そして足首近傍までを保護可能である。しかし、エアバッグが、乗員の膝に関して、膝部前方部位を保護可能であるものの、膝部上方部位を保護し得ない形状に形成されている。このため、乗員の膝部上方部位をも保護し得るようにエアバッグによる保護エリアを広くすることが望まれる場合がある。この場合において、エアバッグから乗員の下肢への負荷が小さくなるように構成することが要求される。

本発明は、上記した課題に対処すべく、乗員の下肢前方に配置されたエアバッグが車両の衝突時にインフレータから供給されるガスにより乗員の下肢に向けて膨張展開して乗員の下肢を保護するようにした車両用乗員下肢保護装置において、前記インフレータから供給されるガスにより膨張展開して乗員の膝部前方部位および臑部を保護する下方膨張部と、この下方膨張部から供給されるガスにより膨張展開して乗員の膝部上方部位を保護する上方膨張部とを前記エアバッグに設けるとともに、前記上方膨張部内のガス圧を前記下方膨張部内のガス圧より低くするガス圧低減手段を設けたこと(請求項1に係る発明)に特徴がある。
