Description
ン」と呼ばれる光ファイバ(ラインファイバ)が、伝送
情報を搬送する光信号をガイドする伝送システムに関す
る。本発明は、特に、これらのファイバが、使用される
波長でシングルモード型である場合に関する。
く、損失を生じる。長距離伝送の場合には、一連のライ
ンファイバを用いて形成される伝送ラインの長さに沿っ
て、増幅器または中継器を配分することによって、こう
した損失を補償する。その場合、伝送ラインは、各終端
に増幅器が配置されて直列接続される一連のセグメント
の形状を呈する。システムのコストを下げるには、これ
らのセグメントの長さをできるだけ長くすることが望ま
しい。しかし、各増幅器に固有のノイズは、その利得に
応じて増大するので、伝送ラインにおける損失を考慮す
ると、この長さは制限される。
分散のスペクトルのスロープとを有する。波長分散は、
搬送波の波長、すなわち伝送信号を搬送する波長に依存
する。波長分散は、伝送信号を変形することができる。
しかも、システムの容量、すなわち情報の伝送速度は、
一般に、情報を搬送するために複数の搬送波長を用いる
多重化によって増大される。この場合、波長分散スロー
プがあるために、これらの波長の各々に対して同一の波
長分散値が得られない。ところで、波長分散値が余りに
高すぎると、信号が過度に変形することがある。そのた
め、ラインファイバの符号と反対の符号を持つ分散(場
合によっては分散スロープも)を備えた分散補償装置に
より、この変形を周期的に補正することが既知である。
ところが、長距離伝送の場合には、こうした補償装置
は、補償する単位長さ当たりの分散が大きければ大きい
ほど損失を発生する。そのため、一般には、ラインファ
イバの単位長さ当たりの分散を制限することが望まし
い。
ラインファイバが、当時は好ましいとされた搬送波長す
なわち1300nmで分散が小さくなるように選択され
ていた。だが、後になって、エルビウムドープファイバ
を備えた増幅器を使用できるという理由で、約1550
nmの波長範囲が好ましいとされるようになった。こう
した新たな波長では、これらの設置されたファイバの分
散値が高くなり、所望の高速データ伝送と相容れなくな
っている。そこで考慮された解決方法は、このシステム
の各ラインセグメントの出力に分散補償装置を挿入する
というものであった。この解決方法は、新しい波長範囲
に適合するような新しいファイバを設置するよりもずっ
とコストが低いという理由で実現された。
知のシステムの伝送品質をよくするために、当業者は、
これらのシステムの増幅器の出力でパワーレベルを上げ
ようとした。けれども、伝送品質を劣化する非線形効果
が大きくなるので、これは制限されることになった。こ
のような非線形効果は、導波路内伝播波の伝播を伴う光
の電界の値が高すぎることによって増大する。導波路内
伝播波の所定のパワーレベルに対して、光の電界の値
は、使用されるラインファイバがこれらの信号に提供す
るモード実効断面積が大きければ大きいほど小さくな
る。

支配的になる傾向があるので、この和を減少するには、
第2の成分「導波路分散」の絶対値を増加する以外には
ない。ところで、第2の成分は、ファイバのコアとクラ
ッドとの間の屈折率の差に比例する。ファイバの分散を
減らそうとする場合、こうした屈折率の差を増加しなけ
ればならない。そうすると、モード実効断面積が小さく
なる傾向がある。

するラインファイバの波長分散値を制限すべきであると
考えられており、これは必然的にこのラインのモード実
効断面積を制限する結果になる。モード実効断面積は、
通常、波長分散が数ps/(nm・km)であるファイ
バでは、70〜120μm2である。

明によればラインファイバの波長分散に関して許容範囲
が広げられるので、ラインファイバのコストを制限する
ことができる。
