Abstract
1386028 Alkylsulphonylmethylbenzyl alcohols SMITHKLINE CORP 6 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 10768/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds (I) (including salts thereof) where R is straight or branched C 1-5 alkyl, R 1 is branched C 3-5 alkyl, C 3-6 cycloalkyl or C 3-6 cycloalkyl-methyl or a group of Formula (II): R 2 is H, Me or Et, R 3 and R 4 are H, OH or MeO and R 5 is H or Me, are made by hydrogenating compounds (III): 3 - Chloromethyl - 4 - hydroxyacetophenone, 4- hydroxy- and -benzyloxy - 3 - methylsulphonylmethylacetophenones and 4 - benzyloxy - α- bromo - 3 - methylsulphonylmethylacetophenone are also prepared. Pharmaceutical preparations having bronchodilatory action contain (I) as active ingredient. Administration is orally or parenterally.

Claims (8)
1. A chemical compound of the formula: or a pharmac on salt of said comp¾nd, wherein: R is straight or branched chain lower alkyl of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; is branched chain lower alkyl of from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl or R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; Rj and R^ are hydrogen, or methoxy, and Rj. is hydrogen or methyl.
2. A chemical compound according to Claim 1 in which R is methyl.
3. A chemical compound according to Claim 2 in which R2 is hydrogen.
4. A chemical compound according to claim 3 in which R^ is t-butyl, being the compound o< (t-butylaminomethyl) -4-hydroxy-3- (methylsulfonylmethyl)benzyl alcohol.
5. A chemical compound according to claim 1 in which R is ethyl and R, is hydrogen. -lo-
6. A chemical eompond according to 01aim which R2 is ethyl and H| ia t-butylt being the compound «-(1-t-hutylaminopropyl)-^hydroxy--3-»(methyl8ulfonylmethyl)~ benzyl alcohol.
7. · A pharmaceutical composition in a dosage unit form comprising a pharmaceutical carrier and · chemical compound of Claim 1.
8. A method of preparing any of the oompounda of Claim 1 substantially as described herein.
