Abstract

999,552. Braking devices. J. TROUIN. March 30, 1962, No. 12292/62. Heading F2E. [Also in Division B8] In a safety device for controlling the speed of lowering of workmen, invalids &c. attached to a rope 3, Fig. 1, on a reel 1, a brake is automatically applied through a pawl-and-ratchet means at a predetermined speed of lowering. The reel 1 carries a square cam 16, Fig. 3, engageable with a roller 17 on a spring-loaded pawl 18 which is pivoted at 19 on a brake drum 23. On rotation of the reel 1 above a given speed, the pawl 18 engages ratchet teeth 20 associated with the cam 16 so that the brake drum 23 is caused to rotate with the reel 1. The outer face of the drum 23 carries a scroll 27, Fig. 2, engaged by a pin 28 on a brake- , actuating lever 29, whereby shoes 33 are progressively engaged with the drum 23 to stop the reel. Both the reel 1 and drum 23 are coupled to coil springs 9, 25 which operate to return the reel and drum to the initial position on manual release of the brake by a key 40 associated with a cam 37 and plungers 35.
