Abstract

1,000,968. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 20, 1962 [Aug. 1, 1961], No. 27789/61. Heading F2E. An automatic adjuster, for a disc brake of the kind comprising a pair of pivoted levers 10, 11 carrying pads 14, and an applying lever 15 pivoted at 16 to one lever 10 and connected by a tie-rod 21 to the other lever 11, comprises a nut 23 rotatable on a threaded portion 22 of the tie-rod and abutting a trunnion block 20 carried by lever 15, a pair of spring pawl plates 28, 29, Fig. 4, having lugs 31 engaging a slot 32 in the outer end of the nut so as to rotate with the latter, and ratchet-wheels 27, 30, the former being engaged with a sleeve 24 which is in turn engaged with block 20 to prevent it rotating, and the latter being rotatable upon movement of the applying lever 15 through the engagement of a peg 33 carried by it with one end of a slot (Fig. 3, not shown) in lever 15. The arrangement is such that upon movement of lever 15 in the brake applying direction beyond a certain amount the end of the slot in lever 15 engages peg 33 and rotates ratchet-wheel 30 to slip over one or more teeth on the pawl plate 29, the assembly of pawl plates 28, 29 and nut 23 being held stationary during such movement by the interengagement of ratchet-wheel 27 with pawl plate 28. Upon subsequent release of the brake the other end of the slot in lever 15 engages the peg 33 and rotates ratchet-wheel 30 in the opposite direction, so that it drives the pawl plate 29 and hence nut 23 to take up slack, pawl plate 28 slipping over one or more teeth of ratchet-wheel 27 during this movement so that return movement of the nut is prevented. A rubber bellows 37 encloses the adjuster completely excepting that an opening is provided for the peg 33 to project through it in sealing relationship. The brake is applied either by a fluid pressure cylinder 18 or a cable 19, both arranged to act on the free end of the lever 15.
