Abstract

1285473 Rope brakes MARTIN-THOMAS Ltd 2 July 1970 [21 July 1969] 36477/69 Heading F2X [Also in Division B8] A safety brake on a rope climbing device (see Division B8) comprises a brake shoe 75 spring biased into braking engagement with a safety rope 35 once either the rope being climbed goes slack or the climbing device reaches an excessive speed. A pulley 78 engageable with the rope being climbed is mounted on a shaft 78A supported in a pair of parallel plates 70 freely mounted on a shaft 72, the brake shoe 75 being held inoperative against spring 83 by a pin 74 supported in the plates 70 while the pulley is biased by the taut rope. Upon slackness in the latter, the shoe 75 wedges against the rope 35 with the aid of rollers 76A, 76B. When an excessive speed of rotation of the pulley 78 takes place, pawls 79 thereon are centrifugally dis placed to engage pins 80, whereupon a gear wheel 82 is rotated to drive a geared segment 72 fixed on the shaft 72, which therefore rotates. A flat 84 on the shaft 72 eventually aligns with slots 85 in the plates 70 and permits the plates to be upwardly displaced by the spring 83 as the brake block 75 is applied.
