Abstract
998,214. Steering boots. ERICKSON TOOL CO. May 6, 1963 [March 15, 19631, No. 17862/63. Heading B7V. A steering mechanism, e.g. for a jet-propelled boat having a substantially flat bottom at its stern and a jet nozzle 14 with associated steering means, comprises a rudder 39 on each side of the boat near the stern mounted for outward swinging movement from a position substantially flush with the side of the boat and a control arrangement 45 for independently moving the rudders. Each rudder 39 is fixed on a bar 37 in a recessed bracket 31 in the side of the boat and is moved by a tiller 42. A steering vane 15 is located in the nozzle 14 and linked by cable to the steering wheel 17. A link 54 is connected to the vane 15 and to a gear 48 mounted on a bracket 46 inside the boat so that rotation of the vane by the wheel 17 produces similar rotation of the gear 48 and rotation of either the gear 47 through link 56 and pin 57, or the gear 49, through link 53 and pin 59, to move its associated rudder through link 50, spring link 51 and tiller 42. The rudders 39 provide effective steering when the boat is moving at slow or non-planing speeds. The jet propulsion unit is provided with a reversing deflector 25. The arrangement 45 and rudders 39 may be used on towed propeller-driven craft.
