Abstract
1,072,124. Steering ships; blade wheel propellers. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. May 25, 1964 [May 25, 1963], No. 21431/64. Headings B7G and B7V. A steering system for a ship having a transverse duct traversing a hull adjacent one end thereof and below the water line, Figs. 1 to 5 (not shown), comprises a blade wheel propeller having blades which project into said duct and means for driving the propeller, the section of each blade being symmetrical relative to a central plane at right-angles to the chord of the blade and the blades being arranged to perform a controlled rocking motion about a neutral position tangential to the circular orbit (Figs. 4 and 5) of the blades, the propeller also having control means (8) which is either fixed in a position displaced from the central neutral position or is displaceable from this central neutral position along one diameter only. As illustrated in the Figs. (not shown), the ship is driven by a propeller (2). A transverse duct (4) is arranged in the bow and (Figs. 4 and 5) illustrate how the jet of water employed to steer the ship may be directed to either port or starboard by reversing the direction of rotation of the propeller. The control disc (8) lies in front of the centre of the blade circle in the direction of travel of the boat. Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) illustrate a displaceable control disc (10).
